Guilty! Hi I am a newbie...... So I am wondering if anyone has advice for us. We just bought our first dog, Bella the yorkie. She is so cute! Unfortunatley we both work full time jobs and have to leave her home alone for about 9 hours! She started off in an exercise pen and now at 3 months she is confined to a portion of the kitchen with access to a patio. She is somewhat potty trained to go outside. She has plenty of toys..kong, cube, etc. We have been going home for lunch until this week since she has a more open area to hang out in now. We make sure to play with her when we get home and in the morning as well. I feel really guilty leaving her alone and have even considered selling her to a family that is able to give her more time during the day. We thought it would be easier to raise a puppy... even with our full time jobs! Thanks. |

First of all how is she handling being home by herself? Have you considered leaving a radio or tv on for her? I wouldn't be to hard on yourself, it's sounds like you are doing the best that you can. I'm sure there are lots of members on here who work full time. I have been fortunate enough to stay at home the last 10 years with my son. So when mine are alone it's usually for only 2 -3 hours at a time sometimes more. Just go with your heart. Welcome to YT. |
We do leave the radio on for her...and she gets super excited when we get home! She seems to be okay...usually busy with the kong so she doesn't notice when we leave. I guess I'm just a nervous first time dog owner! Thanks! |
It really sounds like you are trying your hardest! Do what you think it best, but make sure your situation really isn't working before you make that decision. If you can try to still come home at lunch, just to break up her day. And as peace of mind: She probably sleeps most of the day away since she is so young. |
Don't feel guilty! If everyone who worked couldn't have a dog it would be a horrible world. I had 3 dogs at different times and always worked full time. I had no problem with them. They just loved me when I was home. With Cali I am no longer working and it was easier to train her and I love being home with her but I think she is spoiled now and I don't want to leave her for more than a couple of hours. So it kind of limits my life right now but that's ok. Once she is older they sleep alot and just wait til you get home. Just give her lots of love when you get home. Also, Welcome! |
I work full time and have to leave Hobbs at home all by himself during the day. When we first got him, my husband was able to stay at home with him all day, so he got really spoiled. Now that we are both working full time, we have been feeling really guilty about having to leave Hobbs at home all alone all day. It really took some adjustment for Hobbs, too, because he was not used to being left alone. We do come home for an hour every single day for lunch. I think that it really helps to break up the day for him. I would definately suggest trying to come home during lunch if you are able. We have also decided to get another yorkie! I have heard from so many people that it really helps to have two so they can keep each other company. But don't feel guilty about being a working mother! There are lots of working mothers on YorkieTalk!!! Besides, I know for sure that Hobbs sleeps 90% of the time that we're gone during the day. He is always yawning and stretching when we come home for lunch and when we get home in the afternoons, like he has just woken up from a nap. WELCOME! Please keep us updated on what you decide to do. |
i felt the same way when i got lexi, i would cry leaving her alone.. i do have my mom come over to check on her though.. i do leave the tv on all day long for her and she does sleep alot... give lots of love when you get home.. it will be ok.. |
I have the same issue with Tyson. I work all day. He sleeps most of the time I am gone. I live in Brooklyn,NY & work in Manhattan-so I am gone about the same amount of time you are gine. He is adjusting fine. I have had my Tyson since March-and he is doing fine. Some mornings he cries when I leave & some mornings he just sleeps. |
I am sure he is ok when you are gone. If anything it is only you that it bothers. It may take a little longer to train, but everything will be ok. Welcome to YT. |
Thanks for all the great advice. I don't feel as bad anymore! What's funny is that yesterday after work I bumped into my neighbor and she offered to check on Bella for me and even offered have her play with her poodle! I am totally relieved to know someone will be able to check on her during the day when I can't! Thanks again! :) |
Our dog sleeps for the most part of the day. We both work and are gone for 10 hours at a time, she works less, 3 times a day so its not that bad. Leave a camera running, see what goes on. I am pretty sure the doggie is napping in an afternoon. |
