Need advice!! Help! 3 Attachment(s) Hi YTers, I need some of your opinions... I am currently a graduate student at Boston College. Frodo, my yorkie-mix puppy, is now 7 months, and he came to live with me at 11 weeks. We currently live in an apartment with one other roommate, but Frodo spends his time mostly in my large room and follows me everywhere around the house. My brother came to visit from California, and he swears that I am Frodo's idea of his substitute mother. In January, I have the opportunity to do an internship outside of the U.S. for approximately 4 months. I've begun the application process for this internship abroad, but I am compelled to possibly withdraw my application for an international placement, and ask instead, for a domestic placement. Originally my plan was to leave Frodo with my parents in California while I was away. However, the more I think about it, the more uncomfortable I have become with the idea because of the fact that my parents own a business and would probably not be able to give Frodo the appropriate care and attention that he needs. Our family has previously owned a dog, but she was an outdoor dog and much larger than Frodo (Brownie was 45-50 lbs) and didn't need the care that a yorkie needs. I know that their intentions would be kind and in the right place, but I don't think they quite know what to expect in regards to caring for a yorkie. Soooo... I'm considering giving up this great opportunity to study in another country in order to care for Frodo myself, as I don't have any friends with the ability to take him in and care for him adequately. Am I crazy to give up this international internship????? It would only be 4 months, but Frodo is quite attached to me, and I am quite attached to him as well. I'd be willing to be away from him for a little while, but I'm not okay with leaving him with questionable care. Of course, the obvious answer is - don't leave him with my parents. But other than that, I'm kind of out of options. Any advice on this? I've posted some recent pictures of him - he's quite smashing, isn't he? :P I'm totally in love with him!!! |
i was suppose to go to china for a month to see my father (he's opening a resturant there) but i decided to stay here instead because i adopted baxter a month ago and i cringe at the idea of leaving him for more than a day. though, i talked to my dad about it and he said there was no reason i couldnt bring him to china with me. and i remember that the last time i flew overseas there was a small dog barking a few rows ahead of me. so why couldnt you take him with you? it might make things a little more complicated, but it would be worth it. OR if you cant take him, then maybe someone from this forum would be willing to pet sit for you? |
Ask yourself if this would be something you would regret later in life if you didn't do. I am sure that you could find someone to watch him if you were unable to take him with you. I like Mikeys idea of taking him with you if you can. I wish you the best. 4 months away will not hurt your relationship with him if you decide to go. Good luck. |
If this is a once in a lifetime chance, I would have to think long and hard about going and in the long run, I would do it. You are not far from some of us near the DC area. Bet some of us could help you out with some ideas..We love helping out with these types of situations.....And, he will still love you when you come home.....PROMISE! |
I think you're crazy to pass up this opportunity!!!! It sounds like something you will enjoy and will benefit you the rest of your life. Frodo may not get the "substitute mother care" that you have been giving him, but I'm sure he'll do just fine while you're gone. He'll make himself at home in only a day or two, and I'm sure he'll adjust just fine. I'm sure you think that he'll just pine away - but dogs don't do this - especially if they are in a comfortable home where their needs are being met, and they have good people caring for them. The opposite is really the truth. It will be you (not him) who will be suffering "separation anxiety." QUOTING YOU: ". . . my parents own a business and would probably not be able to give Frodo the appropriate care and attention that he needs" (There isn't any reason in the world they can't work and still take very good care of your little pup for four months.) A lot of us work and our pups are playful, happy, healthy, well-adjusted little dogs. Discuss your concerns with your parents. You are so fortunate that they are willing to take care of your puppy for you. - I'm sure they will all do just fine. And any "spoiling" he doesn't get while you're gone will be all the better for both of you when you get home. If you were my daughter - I'd be packing your bags for you!!!.....and insisting that you go. ***** The only problem I can think of is that your parents are going to fall in love with your little dog while you're gone --and you're going to have to kidnap him from them when you get home to get him back. And - in all honesty - they may end up spoiling him as much or more than you do......... ***** I can't imagine a reason in the world why your parents can't take good care of your pup for four months. Start packing!!!!! Four months will fly by. Carol Jean |
If it were me, I could not leave my babies that long, the longest I have ever had to be away from them was a couple days, I can't imagine 4 months. So I would do exactly what mikey said, I would take them with me, this way I get to enjoy the great opportunity while not having to worry or miss my babies because they would be there with me enjoying my once in a lifetime experience!!:D :D |
I think it depends on where you are going. Great Britain will not allow you to bring your dog into the country without 6 months of quarantine. But in other contries, Germany for example, it is no problem at all. Your little dog just needs a rabies shot and a Vet clearance and you can take him with you. You also can take small dogs in a travel carrier in the cabin on most airlines. Maybe you could do some research on that. But don't forget to check if dogs are allowed in your quarters abroad. Good luck and try not to miss out on the opportunity! :aimeeyork |
Don't give up on your dreams. I'll watch him for four months. |
