Toy Yorkies As long as I've been on YT, I've stood back and watched the arguments every time someone calls a Yorkie a Toy Yorkie. But as I was googling it tonight, I noticed the AKC lists Yorkshire Terriers among its Toy Group. What's up with that? Are YTers...WRONG? http://www.akc.org/breeds/toy_group.cfm |
Yorkies are counted in the Toy class by the NZKC here in NZ too. Dougal takes issue with this classification himself but everyone knows that he's special!;) |
being in the toy group doesn't mean the term "toy" is used to name the breed distinguishing it from a "standard" version. poodles for instance comes in standard, miniature, and toy and compete in two different groups, toy group and non-sporting. same with the schnauzer, they also come in standard and miniature and compete in the working and toy group depending on the breed variety. the standard poodle is considered a different breed from the toy poodle and are judged based on their own breed standards. yorkshire terriers only comes in one variety and judged based on a single standard. there is no "toy yorkshire terrier" in the toy group and a "standard yorkshire terrier" in a different group. the term "toy yorkie", "standard yorkie", "teacup yorkie", "miniature yorkie" are all just marketing terms not a breed term. |
I would not 'toy' with a Yorkie! Just think about those dangerous fangs! And the viscious look they can give you! LOL :D |

I have to admit that I don't see a problem wiht it either. Yorkies come in all sizes most of the time depending on the size of mom and dad. SO why not give them nicknames according to their sizes. Just a thought. Michelle |
I just had a post typed and lost it. In short I can see why using those terms are bad when Yorkies are bought off of the internet. But what about when you meet the breeder face to face? What about when you get to see the mom and dad and the others pups. Is it so bad then? i can definitely see both sides of the fence. Michelle |
There has been some debates over the use of the word TEACUP....and hunniebunnie nailed it with her post....Because it is used as a selling tool to command more money... TEACUP is mostly used by unethical breeders and those who don't really know better - IMO..the words are very different in meaning.....but that was an interesting question you posted :) |
I normally see posts that don't like the word "teacup." Which I understand why it always seems the unethical breeders and the ones out for the money use that term.....coincidence I think not. |

I thought toy was okay; since that's their classification. It's teacup that's frowned on due to the fact that some people try to breed females that are smaller than breed standard (under 3 lbs). Is that right? :) |
