Poor Lola I have not been on much lately because I had finals, then driving from MO to AZ for the summer with animals, and then off to a family vacation. I am so happy to be back posting on YT again, unfortunately my post is not happy. My family had a vacation planned to HI before I got Lola. I know that I should have waited and gotten a puppy after, but I just COULDN'T. I decided to board her at a fancy pet resort where she got to play with other dogs outside in the grass. When I picked her up I noticed a bit of sneezing/coughing and gave it a day, but she did not get better so we went to my mom's vet and sure enough she has a upper respiratory infection and is on antibx. She clamped her mouth shut when I tried to give them to her, so now I put a bit of peanut butter on the end and she takes in the syringe and I give a quick squirt. Poor thing has vomited twice even though she takes it with food. The good news is that she doesnt seem to be very bothered by being sick. He appetite and energy is good and the vet says that it's not in her lungs yet. Also, I am sure that you all can imagine the shape her coat is in being there for 9 days. I got the baby detangler that has helped some but she is so squirmy that I have resorted to cutting. Slowly I'm picking through it, trying to save as much as we can. And our last issue is a cyst left from her last vaccine. She bleed alot and swelled up shortly after and now it is smaller and harder. The vet here said that is not an uncommom reaction with the rabies shot so hopefully it will go away. The shot was on 5/11 so its been a while. With all of those troubles, Lola is still doing great. She LOVES playing with all of my mom's BIG dogs. I'll post pics of that soon. She is in great spirits and is learning alot. I'm sure she'll miss AZ when we go back to school in August. Well, that is our update. She'll be 4 months tomorrow and weighs 2 lbs 11 oz. Her head is really grey, but I can see some small redish hairs poking up. Its going to be so exciting to watch her change! |
Poor baby, I hope she gets better quick. It's hard to watch them be sick, please keep us updated and give her some extra big hugs.;) |
I am sorry Lola is sick! Mine always get a big bump from the rabies shot, too. I hate that. It does go away pretty quickly. Have a great summer vacation! |
Now she is on antibiotics she should get better quickly. Holly has the same thing and has improved about 95% after 6 days. I half her tablets and hide them in a little rolled up salami! Out of interest-has she had the kennel cough vaccine? Holly had it at 12 weeks and still got this infection at 7 months.I think it is like the flu-similar virus, but different strain. Good luck with the grooming. |
Thanks everyone, she is doing MUCH better. Shes only sneezed a few times today. Our antibiotics are in liquid form so peanut butter on the end of a syringe is working really good, but the hiding it in salami sounds like a good idea too. In answer to your question, she did get the bordetella vaccine 4 days before going to the kennel. She received it intranasally, which is supposed to be faster acting, although not always as strong of a response. They didn't culture her or anything to see exactly what she had, but bordetella is a bacteria so it is actually quite different than a virus, but a virus can produce very similar symptoms. I'm guessing that she did have some type of bacteria since the antibiotics seemed to clear it up and antibiotics are useless against viruses (sorry, that is just the medical student in me coming out). Good Luck to Holly! Im glad to hear that she is clearing up too. I just get so scared about these little pups! I hope that she doesn't have to go to a kennel for a long time. I've almost got all of the tangles cut out and she actually doesn't look that bad because the hair on her back is ok and covering up the patches. Anyways, thanks again everyone! Happy Memorials Day!:usaheart: :smileyfla |
