Zodiac Flea control I'm going to the park tomorrow with my furbaby. I thought that i could get him something that prevents him catching fleas etc. I Heard of ADvantage before but petco was out of it. I decided to by zodiac this way he would be prepared for tomorrow. NOw i did my research online and it said that zodiac had some sort of chemicals that are toxic. Is my dog gonna get sick? I have already used it on him. I have more 3 more packets left. I just need to know it this is safe. If not , i will through them aways . This is my first time even hearing about these products .I"m still old school using the regular flea collars. |
all flea medications are toxic......... they are all poisons...... some are just more potent than others |
Orinskye is right. They are all toxic. You can find websites about dogs getting terribly sick or dying from Bio Spot, Advantage, Zodiac (which contains permethrin right? I've read terrible things about that). Even Frontline which I thought was a better choice. Some dogs do fine with these products, tragically some don't. Flea collars emit a toxic cloud that your dog is constantly inhaling. When you hug them so are you. When you pet them the poison is on your hands. Flea collars are very dangerous to young children. That doesn't help with your search for a good solution for controlling fleas but I couldn't read your post and not pass the info on. |
Everything that everyone has already said it so true! When we first got Toto we were advised not to use anything that was not recommended/approved by our vet! I don't even change her food without consulting Dr. Lucy. There are "same name" products that can be purchased from pet stores, etc., however, we only buy what we use from a vet. She always tells us wherever we are ... go to a vet to buy any of this or call me and I will send it to you! The "over the counter", same name stuff is not always the same as the "vet formula". The first time we discovered fleas on Toto, I called Dr. Lucy to ask her to recommend a good flea shampoo ... she didn't recommend ANY flea shampoo! She told us to go to a local vet and get a vial of flea treatment & a syringe ... bathe her in her regular shampoo, kill all the fleas, dry her and put 1/2 the treatment between her shoulders. We did ... it worked ... been using it ever since! She did finally "graduate" to a full dose! ;) |

Bio Spot, even thought it is over the counter, has to be used with caution. MAKE SURE THE FORMULA YOU USE IS SPECIES SPECIFIC..Dog for Dog and Cat for Cat. My vet treated 2 young cats for poisoning after the owner mistakeningly picked up Dog Bio for her cats. She applied it and within a short period of time, both cats were seizing. Even with being treated by a specialist, one kitty died and the other will most likely have neuro deficits..We just take OTC products as safe, but the truth is, they do not have to be put thru the same rigorous testing as other products.. |

What does everyone else use for flea control? |
Don't use Zodiac!!! It's the worst product I've ever tried. First it never got rid of the fleas and second, Milo has irritation from it. He's less than 3lbs. I've never tried the other products(frontline ect.. ) but I do have first hand expierence with this product and it's crap!!! :thumbdown |
bio spot is crap too........... it doesnt work at all..... i use advantage on toby and that seems to do the trick, but they still come back eventually (after the dose wears off,) but i try and stretch it out as long as i can |
The ONLY thing that works for us is Frontline Plus. We have had very bad flea problems in our house (not that we aren't clean people, it happens) and Frontline knocked them out. |
Frontline PLUS is for dogs 11 pounds and over. It says on the package not to use it on smaller dogs. I use 1/3 container of Frontline on my tiny beasties once a month. In my area, TICKS are a huge problem and this will take care of them. But, you will have to decide with your vet how much to apply.. |
This is what I buy: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...+113378+113564 My vet adviced a full dose for Sandy (14 lbs) and a half dose for Tia (3.5 lbs) |
I use frontline topspot on Mojo (cuz he is under 8 lbs) I only reaply every 40-50 days (it is suposed to last for almost 3 months on flea control) Mojo did get fleas once, and now i take care of the enviroment also, once a month i wash all the outside area with a flea and insect killer, i fogged the whole house and also once every 2 weeks use carpet powder with flea and insect killer...i just really hate fleas:( |
