Puppy feeding question...at night Does a 3 month old puppy (about 2lbs 12 oz) need to be fed through the night? We usually put her to bed around 9-10pm and leave her food bowl there (she free feeds). Should I leave food in her ex pen all night long or should I take it out...reason I ask is because I can hear her eating through the night and she poops all over the place in the morning (and steps all over it)and doesn't fail to knock over her food bowl by the early morning with food splattered all over her ex pen even though she has a night light. Can I take this away before she goes to bed? This is her set up: long ex pen with sleep area on one end, food bowl/water in middle, pee pad on the other far end. She has recently started pooping in her sleeping side which is discusting (what happened to not wanted to soil their 'den'? Sometimes she does her business on the pee pad/litter box, sometimes she misses, sometimes she does her business right by her bed area??? Also, is it normal for her to pee all over herself sometimes? her tushy and legs? |
I didnt keep food in the Xpen when I put mine in at night. I did keep water in there though |
At first I left food in the pen but had the same problem of poop all over in the morning:eek: So I stopped feeding after 4 pm and poof, no more poopy on the floor and feet and wall and side of pen and on each other. :D That makes me happy! |

Do you leave only water like Chachi's mom above? Thanks Chachi's mom! |
I leave water out all day everyday. My girls are 1 year and 4 months, my baby is such a piggy and was gaining way too much weight, so I only feed them twice a day because Tilly was eating all the food and Maggie wasn't getting any. Haven't had a bit of trouble with health issues. And I like that I can see if they are eating every day so I know they are feeling good. When I only had one baby I left food out all the time but still picked it up in the evening so no poop problems. Hope that helps ya! |
When Cali was that age I fed her at 10:00pm and no food in her pen or water at night. She never pooped in her pen during the night. The I fed her at 5:00 am and then again at 3pm because she had a history of hypoglycemia. |
I think 13 hours is too long to go between feedings. This is a good way to cause hypoglycemia in a young puppy. If I was going to remove the food it wouldn't be until at least 9 p.m. |
I leave food and water for my babies all day. At night I just put less in their food dish and I use water bottles at night so they don't spill their water everywhere. |
I give Jax his dinner at around 5 pm, but I also leave any uneaten food out for him to snack on during the evening. I go to bed around 11 and put him in bed with no food. He is 3 months old and has yet to have any problems with hypoglycemia. |

Thank you for everyone's responses! |
I take food out now I use to put food in the crate at night when my puppy was so small but now that he is up to 3 lbs, I don't. I do offer him food before bedtime though so he can go until morning without getting to hungry. He is able to hold his poop now until morning. When I left the food in his crate he would usually have 2 to 3 poops during the night. Now if I could just get him to quit peeing in his bed. I even tried a very small crate that only had sleeping room and he still peed on his little blankie and on himself. I'm hoping as he gets older that will change. He is just so tired by bedtime and I think that last feeding probably prevents him from being able to hold it all night. |
I free fed all day until we went to sleep around 10 or 11p.m. I think when your crate training then it should be just enough room for them to stand up and turn around and lay down. That is what teaches them to hold their bladder through the night. Then they will not soil their sleeping area. If you give them to much room then they don't know the difference. This is how I have did all my puppies. Also how my mom has did hers and it works great. JMO and my experience. Crystal |
Feeding Lex used to free feed when we first got him for about two weeks. In my effort to housebreak him I went to three times a day and noticed he reallly only wanted to eat twice anyhow. I usually take up his food by six or six thirty. Later on in the night he gets some honey nut cheerios as a snack and he does fine. Never had any issues with him. With this schedule he makes his three poos outside and it's a wrap. No mistakes indoors. The peeing maybe one mistake a week but it's usually on a wee wee pad when my kids neglect to walk him before I get home. Good luck. |
My Yorkie is 11 weeks old and I usually give him food when get home from work at 6pm and leave it out untill i go to bed at 11pm but over night i leave eukanuba dry bits and water all night but not food food. then in the morning i put out the food again and leave out all day untill i get home from work. No mess for me over night he poops and pee's in the wee wee pad. |
