A free puppy????? Ok, I had this oppotunity arrise and I was wondering if it was something you have heard of, or would be leary of. I have been talking to this breeder about her puppies for a while. As we were talking we got into the fact that I would like to learn to show, and possibly someday breed if the circumstances are right. Well as I have gotten to know her she said she liked me and would be willing to mentor me. I was thrilled at the idea because I know that I will need help and advice often. Now she has offered me a dog for free, registared and everything, the only thing she wants in return is one female puppy of her choice in a later litter. Is this strange, or does this happen often, or am I just really lucky? I am not sure what to think. What do you guys think? |
I do think that's strange, but not bad necessarily... I've never heard of such a thing. I understand the pup out of a future litter thing (My mentor also required a pup from a future litter, if I were to buy a pup from her) but not the free thing. You must be the luckiest person to get a free yorkie :D |
Wow, Marlee!!! I assume you are signing something that has all this spelled out. If so, I would go for it! Just protect yourself in writing in case there is a future problem. Sounds great, go for it! |

I guess it just struck me as odd. I mean it wasnt like I wasnt willing to buy a dog. But she keeps telling me how much she likes me and wants a great home for her puppies. I just worry because I hvent heard of it before. Yes there is a contract spelling out that one female of her choice from a futre litter is to be hers. But other than that the puppy is free. I am excited, but afraid to be to excited. I just wanted some oppinions. |
breeder It is not strange at all..breeders make all kinds of deals and trades. Have a conract to protect yourself. Find out who pays for what..stud servcice, vet fees in case of a section..who gets the first pick, second, etc when litter arrives. I co-own with several people, in fact when Whispersmom used my stud Shorty, she got a wonderful little boy, Whiz. She gave him to me and I gave her free stud service. Right now I am waiting for several litter picks from females I placed with friends when I moved to FLorida..you just need to be sure you trust the person adn they trust you. |

Thanks everyone. I am feeling better about it now esp after hearing that for an experianced breeder it isnt such an unusual thing. Looks like I get to go pick him up next week. I am sooooo excited. Bridget is going to have a buddy! :D |
Our breeder made us, or anyone else interested in showing, the same offer. Like Lily's Mom said - protect yourself in writing and you should be fine! :) |

Well, it is difficult to tell if a puppy will be show quality fo rsure, many things can happen as they grow. As of now he does look to have show potential, nice coloring,bite, ears etc. I hope so. He is a cutie no matter wht though. :D |
that sounds like a great deal, just protect your self like the others have said, and things should go smoothly, as long as everyone is in agreeance to who pays what, and so on. My roxie is 13 weeks now, and 3lbs 7ozs (as of yesterday,alot bigger than what i thought she was going to be) and it's come the time to figure if i want her spayed, or if possibly i want to breed her, if i did, it would only be once, and i have not the 1st clue as to how to do it, and how costly it is. I will probably opt for having her spayed, there will be lots of yorkies for me in my future, so i can wait till I feel comfortable with breeding one! |
Free Yorkie We have a free little girl Yorkie, that was given to me. She isnt AKC, her dew claws were not removed, nor her tail docked. The previous owner purchased her from, I am sure, a backyard breeder. The owner didnt realize how active and agressive Yorkies can be, nor did I, since I always had poodles. Our vet has declared her in perfect health, Thank GOD. She is probably close to 8 lbs and is 4.5 months old. Its been fun having her in our home, she makes us giggle alot. Chelsea has all the markings of a Yorkie, was black with tan, I recently had her clipped in the puppy clip, and she is now more silver/gray. The top of her head started graying at 3 months. I lost my toy female poodle, Jan. 2004, and my male toy poodle, Jan. 31, 2005, 4 days later I was offered this precious Yorkie. We think we were very lucky, not only have we been introduced to the Yorkie breed, but she certainly has helped me with the grief, of losing my poodles. Chelsea'sMom :aimeeyork |
Will you be co-owning the puppy? How long do you have to fulfill the agreement about breeding and giving back a female puppy? If the litter is only 1 puppy, would you be prepared to repeat the mating? Since you said "he", if he is studded who gets the fee? Who pays for his STD testing? Do you get to make ALL decisions about him and his care and ownership? ie: if you were to decide to re-locate what is your responsibility to her? If he "shoots blanks" and does not produce, is there an amount you would then have to pay for him? Can the breeder just send people of her choice to you for stud service? Can the breeder tell you to have him neutered if his babies are not quality? Is this a person you know REALLY well? Intact males can be more than a person can handle, train, vet and you might decide you just cannot keep him. What then? I agree it could be a wonderful deal for you but there are a lot of questions that still need to be addressed. Let us know how y'all work it out..And, good luck![COLOR=Blue][B] |
