This maybe a stupid question but... How do you know if the hair is matty? I have read a few post about dogs hair being matty? I try to brush Cordelia everyday, but it's like pulling teeth. When I do finally get her to sit still and brush her, I notice her hair is very cottony and has a quite a few knots. Does this mean her coat is matty? If so, do I need to shave her to start all over? Is their a shampoo and conditioner I can use to fix this without shaving her? |
Clippering your baby's hair will not make a difference in the coat texture. If she is a baby with her puppy coat, her adult coat might be a soft silk. Wooly, cottony coats do mat easily. I do not use a brush on my critters and I have them with every type of coat. I use a greyhound comb and a Belgian comb. Sit with your Cordelia evry night and comb or brush to the skin. That way you can keep her is a longer coat. There are a lot of shampoos and conditioners..ask a groomer for suggestions. I am sure someone on this forum will have suggestions too. |
That would be matty. It is like lots of tangles. You don't have to shave her, you could carefully brush the mats out like you would in your own hair. Sorta start towards the ends and brush all the way back to the skin. especially around their hips and ears they will get lots of mats. I shaved mine off as we have a pool and a huge yard, I want them to tan a little before it gets to hot, and after they get out of the pool and roll in the grass and dirt, forget trying to keep that mess. I leave the hair on their head and legs and tail long, I think they look cute that way--not so much the naked look, but their hair is so soft like that, not at all like a burr on a boy. I use puppy shampoo with conditioner, or my own shampoo (neutrogena) and conditioner when I am out. They also make this puppy spray conditioner that smells like baby powder, I like to spray them with that too, for brushing between baths. |

I agree with Pink Martini. Chachis hair seems to be easier to comb through as he has gotten older. |
