What's everybody feeding theirYorkies!!! I need help. She-ra is 2 1/2 yrs old and loves Purina little bites, but I am wondering if there are better ones. Some to make her coat shiny, and maybe help it grow!!! Any suggestions will be appreciated!! :aimeeyork |
i've been feeding nala purinea puppy chow (which isn't a good dog food) but i am switching her to Natural Balance Ultra Premimum this weekend (got to drive 2hrs to get it  from what i read on their website it sounds like a really good dog food. i did alot of research (plus the help form the wonderful people here) before i decided on one. check out this thread i started i got alot of great advice. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...=changing+food |
I use a mixture of 2 parts BilJac and 1part Royal Canin 28 for adults and 33 for the puppies. I use a bit of Pedigree Puppy canned lamb and rice.. I mix it all in a plastic bag and all of my babies have selections. I feed 7 adults and babies..I feel comfortable leaving dry food down when I have to be away for a meal. I know of a puppy who choked to death on Pedigree dry puppy food while family was at work. A pellet was stuck in the baby's throat and the saliva caused it to swell and suffocate the baby. I know that BilJac disentigrates when wet and Royal Canin almost becomes slimy and can then be swallowed more easily.. |
Thanks!!! |
I feed the pups Eukanuba, or Iams if I can't get to the pet store. They are still eating puppy food, I was going to change them to adult next buy, but now I believe Zowie is 'with children', so I decided to wait until next year. I am hoping for one or two pups and keeping all. I can't bear the thought of giving my babies away--It reminds me of trying to choose a babysitter for the boys when they were babies (I quit work). I am far to critical of my family and friends when it comes to my babies. |
Rylee eats Nutro puppy food. She is doing great with that. My cousin accidentally let her get to her dogs puppy food (Blue Buffalo), poor Rylee was constipated for 2 days! Her dogs poo is always real black and hard, now I see why. I know Blue Buffalo is a great brand (not cheap), but I don't think it is reacting well with our dogs. Rylee loves the Nutro, and it's really, really great for her. It helps immunity, coat, etc. |
I'm feeding my Yorkie puppy Nutro since that's what the breeder had her on. I'll probably continue feeding it to her through her puppyhood since it's not a terrible food. I feed my Maltese Flint River Lamb & Millet and Trout & Sweet Potato foods and have been fairly pleased with it. He seems to be healthier overall on it, but his tear staining is actually worse on it than it was on the crappy Science Diet. I think in the long run though I will end up feeding them both Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul since it is sold locally and I don't have to get it online like the Flint River... and my sister has her Malt on the Chicken soup and he looks fantastic. |
Chicken Soup I am feeding my little ones Eukanuba little bites, but can't say it does anything for their hair, just that is what the breeder was feeding them and they seem to like it (so does my cat, LOL) but had thought about switching to the chicken soup food. I mentioned to my vet that I was going to feed them chicken soup for the puppy lover's soul and he said "No way, that is bad stuff, it will make them sick and give them diarrhea." Has anyone else heard this from thier vet? Why would he say that? Has anyone had any bad experiences with this food? |

Well, a lot of people don't agree with the food I feed my girls. I'll admit there is better out there, but this is what works for me: Sandy gets Nutro Ultra diet food and Tia gets Royal Canin Puppy, to be switched to Royal Canin Yorkshire Terrier when she's older or perhaps regular Nutro Ultra. They get "treat" food once or twice a week. Nothing fancy - usually some cesear wet food. They love me those days. Sometimes I put a little cottage cheese on their food as well, they eat that right up! :) Last night they had some wonderful fresh strawberries with me for dessert. We ALL gobbled those up! |
I agree that the vets push what they are told, what they carry and probably which ever they are getting the best deal on (although it would have to be good.) Maybe breeders do the same, I don't know. I saw at PetSmart yesterday - They have on site vet - Eukanuba has a new formula of pet food that has to be prescribed by the vet. I havent used their vet, but I did find it interesting. I was looking for vitamins and such for my preggo mom. |
Beau gets Nutro Natural Choice Puppy and Natural Balance Beef Roll |
My vet carries Iams, but told me that she feeds her dogs Eukanuba. She also said there isn't much difference between Eukanuba, Iams, and Science Diet (as for as which is best) Lexi gets Eukanuba... |

(80th and Slide). He didn't tell me I should switch from Eukanuba to science diet (though he did mention it was a good food), he just said don't ever feed them the Chicken soup for the puppie lover's soul for the reasons I listed above. I thought that was quite the opposite of what I had heard from owners about it, so that is why I was asking. I guess I'll just have to try it myself and see what happens. :) By the way, what vet do you use? Do you recommend another vet here in Lubbock? I'm not so sure I'm totally happy with mine (that's another looong story). |
Roxie eats royal canin baby dog 30, its great, she loves it, the guy i got her from has fed her this since she could eat dry food, he grinds it up in a blender untill they reach 2-21/2 pounds or 6 months, whichever comes 1st, its quite the expensive puppy food, and her bag is almost gone, and i got it maybe 3 weeks ago? but she loves nutra stat, i sometimes give it to her as treats she licks it right off my finger, its smelly though! shes not taken a liking to the old mother hubbard dog bones i give her, sometimes she eats them, sometimes not... also i have a question about these greenies, are they safe for dogs, i dont give her rawhide anymore bc im scared the lil pieces are going to get in her system, and ive heard it cant cut up her insides, so ive stopped giving her those, as for treats im clueless! |
