Are Unregistered Puppies Ok? What is the difference between unregistered puppies or registered puppies? Because I have decided to get a unregistered puppy because they are probably cheap than registered puppies but IS that ok. If I do get a unregistered puppy will I get papers telling me its a purebred or will I have to get a registered one to? But why are registered papers so important? |
When a puppie is unregistered , it doesn't mean he is cheaper . I often look at the advertizing and price for price , I will choose a registered puppy . Registration means that a person know who are the parents and the lines of the ancestors . Mollie the Yorkie girl of my friend cost him $1,200.00 and mollie's brother who was sold unregistered cost the client $1,000.oo . Talk about cheaper . |
pups But there are different types of "unregistered". Unregistered aca OR apri???Say a reputable breeder had a litter of AKC pups, but for some reason let some go without papers...that is very different then someone who ahs 3 or 4 generations of unregistered. No telling what theyare...BUT if they are healthy and outgoing, why not get a cheap unregistered pup? I had a litter right before ai left MD...there was one male and I told a friend I was not going to register the litter..pup was being neutered, why gie AKC $27 ..papers were unimportant to my friend and he was still 100% purebred. |
Woolfy, I think its ok for you to get an unregistered dog. Where are you getting it? If it comes from a shelter, you may have some big vet bills. Also, if you are getting it from a breeder, why aren't they registerable? There are many many Yorkies out there who need rescuing...just ask a lot of questions about their health. |
I have been told that you can register through CKC if the dog is 6 months old. I downloaded the application from their site and all you have to do is take 3 pictures, 1 from the front, 1 from the back, and 1 from the side and Have either one or two people sign it saying it really is a Yorkie!!!! We did it with an Eskimo dog, and it worked!! Papers aren't important to me unless I plan to breed. My friend breeds her poodle, who is registered, to a male who isn't, they are purebreed, just not registered, b/c mom is the only one!! Glad you are getting one!!!!! :) |
I hope I can say this in the manner I intend to. If you are shopping for a Yorkie and cost is a major issue, I would suggest you save a bit more to cover the vet expenses for the first year. Altering, vaccines, dentals and heartworm and flea and tick preps are expensive. I do not intend to suggest you cannot afford what I have mentioned, but I want to point out that the initial outlay of cash to buy the baby is only the beginning. Do you know this breeder? Why are they not registering their puppies? I cannot imagine the breeder giving you something that says the puppy is purebred if they do not register the litters. Will they give you the name of their vet for a reference? |
sirius is unregistered and yes he was cheaper. that was not why we got him though. papers were not important to me as i do not plan to breed. but we saw both parents the father had papers and we saw them. the mother was not registered but her parents were and we saw them. the woman did not plan on a litter from the mother and then well a litter came. granted i have learned my lesson and will be wary of an unregistered pup next time. some questions have come up. all i can say is do your homework and make sure you can trust the breeder. some red flags are not showing you the parents. also i would like to point out just because you have papers does not mean the puppy is pure bred either. there are alot of shady breeders out there who will say to the akc that this is the father when some dog down the street got the mother pregnant. i have also seen this happen. imo if the puppy is a pet then papers should not matter. just love your yorkie. |
My dog that I am getting is unregistered. THe mother is not and the father was. She is in the process of getting her registered. She sadi I could wait on another litter if I wanted. But I did not care either becuase cosmo is going to just be a pet and I am getting him fixed, so it does not matter to me. Yes, he was cheaper, $250, and he is going to be big but I dont care. ALL I care is that I am getting him MAY 1st. Sorry i am excited. |
You don't have to be sorry you are excited--it is such fun to get a new baby. I think all unregistered dogs, or dogs you do not intend to breed, should be spayed or neutered. Other than that, temperment is the key. If the parents are good dogs, the puppies should be, too. My biggest fear when getting a yorkie was bad breeding. I had a llaso-apso once, I got him from a neighbor of mother's who no longer wanted him. He became blind, I think he was deaf, and I was terrified that he would bite a child. He bit me everytime I groomed him. I sadly had him put to sleep at the age of 2 1/2. I felt he was a victim of bad breeding (people allowing brothers and sisters, etc to mate just to sell cute puppies.) Unfortunately, a biting dog is the absolute worst thing to me, no matter how small, you must make them stop by age 2. |
If you dont plan on breeding, you can see both the parents on site and you get a general honest feeling from the breeder, sure why not?? I dont know if anything is included with the puppy but before leaving make sure the gums are salmon pink, eyes are clear, look at their butt, make sure their is no runny poop sticking to it (dried) and they are active. |
whispersmom2 is correct.... when i was saving for my yorkie, i called around to vets beforehand and found out exactly how much all his initial vet bills were going to cost so that i could add that to the "save goal"... My dog is unregistered, he was $500. True, he is bigger than standard (he is around 9 lbs) BUT i wanted a larger yorkie anyways so this doesnt matter to me. When i was looking for a pup, i was looking purely on price, i dont know what his background is generations back. but i know that he is allllllllll yorkie :p |
Bailey is not registered, I did get to see his father and mother, he was registered she was not, they did not intend to breed,,but It happened, I paid 375.00 for Bailey,, and am happy with him, I had no intention of breeding him, and he is now neutered, I think alot depends on what your plans are for them,, mine was to have a little cuddle bug,, and it worked out fine! :p |
Registered or not registered dogs , I love them all . The real thing is that the persons love them and treat them with TLC . Mine are actually registered but I would love them either if they were not . |

Just an FYI, I heard from a Breeder that the reason she did not register her littler was b/c she was only selling them as pets, not for showing or breeding but she did not want to force the owner to get the dog spayed or neutered, she did not think it was necessary just as long as the new owner was going to be careful and properly avoid pregnancy. |
