adding a second dog I was looking for a little advice... I have an 8 month old Yorkie, Bailey. I am strongly considering a second puppy. (I have one picked out) I wondered if anyone had any tips to acclimating the two dogs? Bailey is very spoiled so I am sure it will be a big adjustment - but my ultimate goal is to have a playmate/brother for him! He gets along great with my parent's dogs when we visit weekly, but tends to very territorial outside or on walks. Any tips? Thanks! ~Kelley |
I would think Bailey would be less teritorial outside of his home. My dogs were always fine outside of their yard, but inside, watchout!! I guess you are considering a puppy. Could you feel Bailey out and introduce him to a pup to see how he does? My guess is he would be fine with a smaller dog that isn't a threat to him. |
We were a little concerned with this with Sandy, but were so pleasently surprised by her reaction to Tia. Her maternal insticts seem to have appeared and she treats her like her own baby. We make sure to still give Sandy "alone" time with us and lots of love and attention! |
I felt the same way with my female- she has always been the queen of the house. We wanted another yorkie, but were afraid of how she would react to it- since she is soooo spoiled. We were really surprised by how accepting she was to the new- not one but two- pups. There wasn't hardly any jealously or territorial issues at all. Maybe just the first day or two over certain "special" toys that she didn't want to share, but after a couple of days she was more than willing to share those also- even bringing those "special" toys to the pups so they could play with her. We are all one big, happy family now! |
I've had Bentley (boy) since puppy hood and we had spoiled him ROTTEN! I decided I wanted another one and I, so to speak, rescued my Bitsy (girl), and brought her home when Bentley was less than a year old. Bitsy was around 3 years old. Bentley loved her from first sight! She, on the other hand had to get used to HIM. It took a couple days of adjustment but now they are inseparable! The ONLY problem we have is making sure they each get fair attention. I think it should be against the law to own just one yorkie :D They are much better in pairs and most are so adaptable! I think you shouldn't worry at all! |
She-ra is the most sumissive dog you'll ever meet!!! There can be a dog 30 feet away and she'll roll on her back, and she'll roll, and roll, and roll, until she is right under them!!! She knows NO stranger!!! |
Magic was right at 4 months old when we brought Sailor home...it was an adjustment at first as Magic had been very spoiled but after a few days, Magic just wanted to play, play, play with Sailor...it gives her someone to chase and run around with when we are busy or gone...they still have their fights over certain toys but they hate it when one is gone or asleep...I would defintely say two is better than one...it makes training so much easier...they learn off each other and they teach other all sorts of things...Sailor takes after her big sister all the time!! |
THANK YOU SO MUCH GUYS!!! I was 100% sure I would get another puppy and it would be great - until I told my family and friends my plans! Most of them warned of horror stories they had heard about adding a second dog, especially 2 males! So that's why I posted, because they had me doubting my instincts so much!!! Thank you all very much for your input! I will get my new baby on the 29th and take a vacation week with them both! So I think in 9 days I can get them pretty acclimated to eachother! Or at least a strong start! Thanks again! ~Kelley |
