Hi. I am new and full of questions. Hi. I just acquired a Yorkie. Her name is Gracie and she is 16 weeks old today! My friend Becky works at a Kennel and she called me with a Yorkie that they could not paper because she had an eye ulcer. She had surgery for the eye ulcer and when I took her to the vet he said it was A-OK. I had been researching Yorkies on the internet and really had decided to get a Cavalier King spaniel instead because everyone said Yorkies were sooo hard to potty train. Well then I got the call and it was at the perfect time since school is out so I can be home with the Yorkie so I said yes! I am so glad I did! She doing very well on housetraining in my opinion. Only a few accidents that were MY fault, not hers. I have been looking more and more on the internet trying to educate myself and I wanted to ask you "seasoned" owners a few questions. Collar or halter? I found on the internet about the prolapsed tracheas. We just a leash and collar to take her out and she is not being "leash trained" yet. She has "kennel cough" and they gave me drugs for it. She has 3 more days of drugs but I read somewhere Yorkies cough alot. Potty training: Once she is trained and can "roam the house" how long do you think is reasonable to except her to go between bathroom breaks? Thank you so much in advance! |
Welcome! I had a yorkie named Gracie before Cali! I never use a collar because of the collapsed trachea problems. My Gracie died at 6 1/2 from complications of a collapsed trachea. Get a harness. Several people on here sell them. I just bought one for Chattiesmom and love it. Cali had kennel cough for 3 months even after 3 rounds of antibiotics but some clear up in a week or too. Just keep an eye on it. If she seems worse take her in to the vet. Each dog is different but once she is older and trained she should be able to hold it for 6-8 hours. Post pictures when you can we love pictures!! |
:wavey: :wavey: Welcome to YT!!!! I would get a harness, I think they are much better for Yorkies. I have no idea about kennel cough, but I'm sure someone will have great answers for you. Each furbaby is different, some catch on fast, and some are really slow, but they do learn :) :) :) Again welcome!!!! and oh yea one more thing, we love pictures!!!:2photo: :2photo: :2photo: |
Yay! Another Kansan! :D Welcome to Yorkie Talk. I'm sure you'll get lots of help with all your questions here. Definitely get a harness - their little necks are very delicate. Fang and Errol developed something similar to kennel cough at about 14 weeks old - it took 3 or 4 rounds of antibiotics and about 4 months before they finally stopped coughing. We try not to go more than 8 or 9 hours without potty breaks. We crate them during the day when we're at work (they go 4-5 hours in there with a mid-day break when I'm home for lunch), and when we are asleep overnight (that's the 8-9 hour time). The rest of the time they have constant access to the bathroom. They were able to hold it 4-5 hours at 12 weeks old, but they were closer to 5 or 6 months old before they could hold it all night. :aimeeyork |
wow, she is doing pretty well then because she already holds it all night! |
I just wanted to jump in on the collar/harness issue. Is it o.k. to have a collar on just for the tags, as long as you attach the leash to a harness? Thanks! |
It is fine to keep a collar with tags on just dont attach a leash. Use a harness for the leash. I took my Jewels for a walk with the leash on the collar once and she coughed so badly |
