Dry flaky skin I've just noticed that Buttercup has flakes on his skin yesterday. I finally found out that I'm not suppose to bathe him every 2 days because it'll cause drying of the skin. Oops! Too late! :thumbdown I took him to the groomer and got his hair trimmed down today and my question is, how can I treat the dry skin? Is there a special kind of shampoo for that? BTW, I have been using Pet Silk Moisturizing shampoo on Buttercup. |
I would supplement him with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids which are in Nutristat and only bathe him every 10 days. If he's not itchy or scratchy, just the supplement should be enough. If he's itchy switch to an oatmeal based shampoo. |
i agree with lacy's mom. you can ask you vet if they carry any fatty acid pills that you can give him. it will shine up his coat and make the skin less dry |
Hobbs has dry flaky skin, too. I only bathe him every 10-14 days. I have started brushing him every single day (instead of once a week) which seems to be helping make his coat shiny. I am still noticing that his little belly is so dry and flaky. What else can I do?? I have switched his food from Pro Plan to Chicken Soup (which doesn't have corn in it), and I bathe him with Head & Shoulders moisturizing shampoo & conditioner (which has helped with the dandruff) but his skin is still so dry. Should I put some kind of fish oil or something on his food?? He doesn't like NutriCal. We had to force feed it to him when he was a little pup. |
Dermcaps! that's what they are called. you can get them from your vet. they are a great omega 3 fatty acid supplement. it will help with the dry skin. Brushing does help by loosening the flakes and getting them off so you won't notice them as much on the skin. and bathing less often helps as well. if you yorkie has long hair you might want to cut it back for the summer, this will help his skin breath more too. |

The derm caps is for smaller dogs the ES is for medium to large breed dogs. By the way, fish oil is one of the Omega fatty acids. In looking at that site, I also saw Missing Link which is very good and supplies the Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. I'm sure you could go down to a pet store and get something off the shelf, rather than ordering. Just look for the keywords Omega fatty acids 3 and 6. |

Tiger gets white flakes too and he gets a once a week bath . . .he gets pretty oily on his head though . . . . I don't like his shampoo/conditioner either . . it is CC products . . .I am thinking of trying Petsilk this time or Coat Handlers. I think I will do a search again on this product but if anyone can comment on this, that would be wonderful. |

Dry Skin Lex had some dry skin when I got him and the vet recommended changing him off of the RC puppy food and finding something without corn and also using an oatmeal shampoo. I did both. His dry skin is now gone and there is no more itching. I bathe him once a week unless he gets really disgusting and then it will be twice a week. |
