Spay/Neuter Program at Local SPCA Our local SPCA does low cost spay/neuters for 45- 55 dollar. Has anyone every used their local SPCA to spay or neuter their boys or girls? My vet charges 200 dollars...that is a big difference. |
Wow, that's cheap.... but I'd make sure it's as good as the services the vet provides. I've seen photos/articles about getting so many people in they just line 'em up on operating tables and move down the line with little individual attention given to each animal. I believe the vet costs more because they have at least two people (surgeon & anesthesiologist - at least my vet does) in the operating room taking care of one single animal at a time. But this might not be the case.... I'd call them and ask for more information. If that includes pre-op bloodwork, what kind of anesthesia they use - we want sevo or isoflurane, how many surgeons/techs are present during the operation, how much post-op monitoring they receive and if there's any kind of pain management (painkillers) provided during recovery.... etc etc Do they offer that price for everyone? My humane society only offers low cost spay/neuters to people that "qualify" - those whose income is too low to afford the procedure at a traditional veterinary office. |

I don't know about dogs but I took my cat to the local SPCA in Baltimore for their low cost spay/neuter program. . They have local vets volunteer their time and they do a really good job. |
I have used them for my other animal in the past. I have used them for my other 2 big mix dogs and 2 of my cats. I think they did a great job! Maybe just check the office out and see if they look overwhelmed? It probably varies from place to place..but my area did an excellent job. I think because they do know what they are doing and have seen it all and have experienced it all. Alls I know is that taking your beloved pet even to your vet doesn't always gaurantee anything..my aunt took her corgi to her vet when she was about 3yrs old and a week later she died..internal bleeding..it was sooo sad and tramatic. Go with your gut. Ask if they are experienced with small dogs? ALthough I know they would be because they do kittens and puppies....hmmm Good luck on your descision.:) |
Thanks I did speak to someone and she was very helpful and friendly. They only do spay and neuter by appt only and they are volunteer vets that preform the procedure. Your right I'm gonna go with my gut. I ask because I am very unhappy with my current vet and need to find another but have not been very sucessful so far. I had alot of problems with my vet with my older boy Remmy who just got diagnoised with bladder stones and it was a very long and difficult process with this vet. I knew there was something wrong with my boy Remmy but everytime I called to ask questions or speak with her she made me feel like I was over reacting and a pain in her behind. She put Remmy on meds that masked the problem instead of doing tests to fix the problem. After 4months of his suffering another vet in the practice (her husband) finally did simple procedure to find the stones. After she sent me to get a 400 dollar ultrasound that did not detect stones when her husband did a dye injection that only cost me 100 dollars to find them. |

I grew up on a ranch, we always had outside cats and farm dogs and always got them spayed/nutered at the local spca. Missy and Max are my 1st yorkies and 1st inside dogs, they're my babies :p so I thought for sure they were gonna go the the real vet who charged $300. I asked around and talked to a few vets and also the vet at the spca, after looking into it I realized the vet at the spca was just as trained and the procedure was the same as the vet in the private practice. Since the neuter was less invasive I took Max to the spca, I paid $40, he recieved excellent care while he was there and he healed just fine, they even sent him home with a pain shot and pain meds for free. Missy on the other hand, I thought since her would be more invasive I'd pay full price and have her spayed at the vet. I paid over $400, the spay was 300 something, plus I paid extra for the pain shot and the pain meds to take home. Im thankfull both of my babies made it through and healed just fine, but I do think the spca could of done a great job on both of them. |

The other problem you would have to be sure about if any of you are going to the SPCA's for neuter/spay on Yorkies is to be sure you ask about having retained baby teeth removed. Yorkies don't often drop them on their own and they would have to be sedated to be removed. If the SPCA does not remove retained baby teeth at the time of spay/neuter you are going to end up going elsewhere to get them removed by the time your Yorkie is a year old. |
