Jealous, scared or worried? So Coco loves to be outdoors with us when we're swimming at my parents house. This weekend was alll swimming, all the time. I'm roasted. Anyways, my question is that when we were diving and swimming in the pool, Coco (who hardly ever barks) was running around the pool barking, but it was a high high pitched bark, almost panicky bark. She refused to be comforted when I held her in my arms to calm her down, she kept barking everytime my nephew jumped into the water or we were all swimming. Do you think she wanted to be in the pool too (she can swim but doesn't really like it)? or maybe she thought we were in danger or the noise was scaring her? What do you all think? |
I vote it's dangerous in her mind. Throw in that she's have to life guard MORE than one person....dangerous overload...how am I going to watch ALL these people. Poor Coco the little life guard. If you get the chance, take her over when it's not quite so splashy and noisey....that might help her fear. In their minds I think noise and splashing must mean someone's in trouble. My SIL has a lab that will jump in and grab you while you're swimming in the pool. She knows someone's gonna drown if she's not careful. But she only does this if it's a lot of people with splashing and noise. |
I would say that she was worried about you being in the water and was trying to warn you to get out. We had a dashund once that followed us to the pond (we had just moved here) and she barked and barked at us in the water. I had my 6 year old daughter with me and after a time she finally came out and swam a circle around us. I really felt that she was saying that my daughter didn't need to be in such a dangerous place. It really made us aware of how much she loved us! I think that's what your dog was trying to tell you. |
I figured that she thought we were in some kind of danger. I have never heard her bark so frantically. I would tell her it's ok and hold her in my arms while I was in the water and she was still doing it. She wasn't doing it as much when I was just swimming quietly on my own, but when there was a lot of splashing going on she got nervous, so I took her upstairs. She was barking so much I thought she was going to bite my nephew to keep him from jumping into the pool  even though she's never bitten anyone or anything. I just wanted her to calm down a bit..lol...I considered just putting her in the water to let her swim and enjoy the water with us, but I didn't want to traumatize her in her fragile state  lol |
Poor baby! She was afraid you were in danger! She was telling you the best way she could that you should get out of that awful water! The larger number of people splashing and making noise just set her off. You did the right thing taking her upstairs! |
Part of it is that people are getting into an area and having fun ---- and she can't easily get to them. I would think for her - it is almost like being abandoned - but they are so close and having such a great time "without her!" Perhaps more time around the pool will help her get better adjusted to it. Carol Jean |
