tips on pulling up hair I have searched & read all of the threads for top knots, etc. but my case is a little different. Avery is 4 months, and my first Yorkie, and I am clueless. I read where y'all started pulling up your puppies hair early on, and I didn't do that....I was clueless, I guess. I really want to start pulling it up, and he won't have any part of it. What is the best way to try to handle them when you're trying to pull up their hair? He's fine with being groomed.....It's just when I start trying to pull it up that he goes CRAZY!!! Who knew such a little dog could be so strong?! :) I don't know how to make him be still, and it's really beginning to be disheartening :( I've tried treats, and so far that hasn't worked. I just thought maybe y'all would have some ideas that I haven't thought of, or maybe I should just give up and let him be a true BOY.......lol. |
Tia is like that too, so I really only end up able to pull her hair up after her bath, while she's wrapped in a towel and being held by my husband. What I am doing is brushing her "top knot" hair every day and putting little clips in it when I can. I figure this way she is a little more used to me messing with it, and when there is enough to pull up into a band, she won't be so surprised. When I put it in a band now, there really isn't enough hair to do much with, so the clips look a little better anyway - Tia's hair is kind of thin on top. |
I did the same as aimee. I started out with a clip because he wouldn't stay still long enough to get a band in. At first he would only wear it a few minutes and would end up shaking it out. I would wait and try again the next day. It doesn't matter how good it looks just let him get used to the feel of it on his head. When I moved on to the bands, I would take them out after a few hours. Now Gus even puts his head down for me to put them in and he wears them all day. Just make sure the hair is not being pulled or he'll really hate it. The clips could be a choking hazard so you have to watch he doesn't try to eat them. |
Milo runs circles with his head on the floor trying to get the bands out of his hair. I always give him greenies while I'm brushing him and doing his hair. But I always put one back. Maybe one day one of us will surrender. LOL |
It takes two people to do Hefner. I try to catch him when he is a little tired and won't fight quite as much! |
ooh this is a great post, because i too am clueless! and i want to put bows/hairclips on Ginger & Oreo :cool: .. i tried today.. they were pretty good about it, except when i was trying to gather the hair on top, they kept trying to lick my hands, or was just curious as to what in the world i was doing to their heads lol.. Ginger's hair is also thin on top, so i don't really know how much to put.. when i was able to put a small claw clippie thingie, her hair looked soo cute, but she shook it out before icould snap a picture :p |

Just keep trying. She'll get used to it and you will get better at it. :) |
Some of you might think i'm crazy but when my dog doesn't want me to do something I put her leash on her and put her on a tall table. Then I wrap the leash around my neck so that I don't have to worry about her falling off and it keeps her close to me. Then I have two hands to do whatever I am needing to do to her. In the beginning I would have her in a laying down position and then everytime she got up when I would try to get in the top knot I leaned over her with my body to keep her from standing up and wiggling away while I'm putting the top knot in. She stays still for the topknot now because she knows I won't let her up until I'm done. She's 14 weeks and has let me put in the topknot for 2 weeks now with no hassle. |
you know this really works for coco. i sit down on a single chair and i make him lay on my lap belly down with his head at my knees and his back legs between mine,and i keep saying "stay" everytime he would move a little and he just let's me do whatever i want! he doesn't mind having things in his hair at all it's like it's not there for him. i guess it's because as soon as i got him i started doing this. he is sucha good cooperative dog i got really lucky with him. hope this helps!!!!!!!!!! :) |

Lol, when I tie a top knot on Tiny Baci he runs around and scoots or paws his hair until the knot comes out. The longest he's stayed with it was for 45 minutes although I've only tried 3 times... I'll try to do it every other day to see if he'll get used to it. I'm scared to put clips or barrets b/c I don't want him to choke om them if they accidently fall out. I'll keep trying though. |
Feisty little guys here ...I can offer a little advise...When Chanel was small...then now with Cheri - I put them between my knees and say firmly "Stay" and usually start brushing slowely and letting them feel good for a few minutes...just trying to relax them first with the brush rather than grooming - then little by little I work around to doing a bow - Cheri will usually will be really calm by then ..I started her with bows around 4 months old Make sure the bows are not too tight - if they paw and try to get it off - hair may be getting pulled - it could be just a few strandss or it's too tight in general - I always move or wiggle the topknot and make sure there's a little give ...if if feels to tight - loosen the elastic by moving it away from their head - It takes LOTS of practice - I'm no pro but I do both my girls everyday and my youngest is NOT fond of me brushing her hair yet. |
Chloeandj , I tried your trick with Gazou and it works very well . I placed his first elastic band to get him use to have a topknot . If I am placing the band too tight , he'll fight to take it off . I have also tried placing the teeth of the comb between his head and the elastic band to make a little space , he accepted it . He doesn't have very much hair on his little head . |
Reagan does fairly well and always has with sitting still for me to put her hair up. I guess the trick is finding a position that you are comfortable with that also allows you to control the dog. I sit down and make Reagan sit between my legs then I cross one leg over the other, kind (in front of Reagan) of a half indian style I guess. So now Reagan is trapped between me and my leg. Then she rests her chin on my leg and really doesn't have anywhere to go because my leg that crossed over the other is keeping her in place. The only thing is that sometimes she will slide her head left and right to try and hide but its not that big of a deal I just move it back straight. Although now I can't put her hair up looking at her to save my life, I've gotten so used to putting it up from behind her. |
