Peeing in crate Hi, we have a 12 week old pup that we've had for about a month now. He has done really well with crate training and up until the last week has never peed in his crate, even over night. All of a sudden, he is peeing in it every night and even when he is in it for short times during the day while we are out. We aren't able to catch him in the act to tell him 'no' since he does it while we are sleeping or out. Has anyone had this experience? Is it a phase? Any ideas of how we could remedy this? Thanks for your help! |
Sounds like he is a little upset about being left in the crate. The only thing that has worked for me is: 1. make sure the crate is not too big. Should be big enough to lay down/turn around. 2. Make sure he goes right before you put him in the crate and right after you take him out. Another thing we did was to make sure they "went", put them in the crate. Wait an hour, let them potty, play for 15-20 minutes. See if they might go again and put them back in the crate. Most all training just takes time, patience, gobs of praise and a nice little treat. We use frosted cheerios. |
The crate may be too big. I was having the same problem (Napoleon would pee as well as poo) until I stuffed half the crate with books. No more peeing and pooing in the crate! I was told that a puppy should have just enough room to turn around and lie down in the crate but not enough room to poo/pee and then be able to totally avoid lying in its waste. |
Coco did this when she was a baby, but grew out of it. Sometimes we forget that they have tiny tiny bladders and can't hold it all the time :( |
Could be a unrinary tract infection maybe...my girl was going a lot more than usual and they tested her and that's what it turned out to be.... |
Thanks for the feedback, sounds like the crate might be too big. It came with a divider so maybe I'll stick that in. It's crossed my mind that he is mad for being put into the crate or left. At night (or in the morning) I am up the very first time he barks to let him out to go potty. I just think that it is weird that he just started doing this, that he was so good about not doing it before. PS. Seems like he pees on the carpet when he wants some attention too. Thanks again! |
Thanks for your advise, we put the divider in his crate yesterday and made it a bit smaller and he made it through the night with no accidents! Thanks again!! |
