Accidental Death

Hi. New to forum. I've read about accidental deaths of yorkshire terriers from falls. Couldn't believe it when I was told today that my neice (18 years old) was holding her Aunt's silky terrier which is over 6 mos. but less than 1 yr., and it jumped out of her arms, broke its neck and died. She's devastated. She's held and loved this animal since her aunt got it when it was a baby. The pup had a broken leg from a fall when her cousin was holding it a couple of months ago. How common is this? Was going to get a Yorkie in August, but now I'm not so sure. I'm concerned and confusted.

Thanks for any advice or comments.

wow, so sorry to hear about her loss!
You just have to be extra carefull with a yorkie, they are fragil!

You have to be careful of accidents with yorkies especially when they are younger just like with any small breed. There just was someone on here that stepped on their young yorkies head and kieed it so accidents happen. Alot of people have yorkies though and they are a joy to own.

:wavey: :wavey: Hi and welcome to YT. Sorry hear to about the loss of the poor baby. You have to be careful with them. But I wouldn't let that deter you from getting a yorkie.

I agree with everyone else. You have to be careful. Ours has tried to jump out of our arms several times. When they want someone or something they want it NOW! Just last night my hubby was holding Gypsy and she decided she wanted to go to me and tried to jump. Luckily Jim was holding her tightly enough she could not get out of his arms.

For some reason, Nina likes to climb up me and right on to my shoulder. I pull her back down because I read someones elses post that let them sit up there and he went right over the back and fell. I think she has a little parrot in her or something!!

This is exactly why I tell my daughter not to pick up the girls! And the first thing she is to tell her friends when they come over is.... if they want to play with the dogs, they have to plant their buts on the ground!!!!

This scares me so much!!!

I am so sorry to hear this... And truly sorry for your loss.

I would not let this keep you from getting a baby of your own... but it should encourage you to set some firm rules on how your baby will be handled by yourself and others.

When we went and picked out Tucker I was sitting in the chair holding him and before I knew it he had jumped. (He was like 8 weeks old). I managed to catch him in mid air! They are so fast and feerless, you have to be on guard every minute. But, there is nothing like a yorkie!

:rbyorkie: My deepest sympathy goes out to your Aunt and family. Please don't let this put you off getting a yorkie.Accidents happen each and every day.Its like car accidents, that doesn't stop people from driving. As all the other posts have said, you just have to be more careful with these little babies.Yorkies are the best dogs in the world,so dont deny yourself the pleasure of owning a little furbaby :)

Just like with anything else small and precious...

You just have to be very careful and not take anything for granted.

I hold my girls straddling my arm, with all the fingers of my hand wrapped around their chest. It makes for a good grip, and then can't get their feet underneath them to propel themselves forward. I don't know where I read about that particular hold, but I did and it works.:p

I agree, you cannot deprive yourself of the pleasure of a yorkie if that is what you really want. Accidents can happen to any pup. You just need to treat your pup like a fragile little angel. Maybe you should purposely seek out pups that are above standard so that they aren't so fragile!:p

You could get a larger Yorkie, if you're not interested in showing or breeding. Mine is 11 pounds and he's a pretty sturdy fellow. I'm still careful with him, of course, but I don't have to worry about him all of the time. He plays hard and does great! I'd be a nervous wreck over a 5-pound dog, personally, and couldn't enjoy him!

I am sorry for your Aunt's loss. I never let anyone hold Cali except family. Even my 20 year old dtr gets a lecture when she is holding Cali up by her shoulder. I try not to carry Cali a lot because of this but because they are small and can get under foot or fall you do have to be very careful with them.

Any small animal you have to be careful to not drop it. Accidents sometimes happen. I'm so sorry for you're aunts loss and feel horrible what you're niece must be going through.

lilbumbleybees 05-11-2006 12:09 PM

They're super tough and fragile at the same time. Bouncer jumped out of my arms when he was maybe 9 or 10 months old. Screamed like he was dieing, but was perfectly fine. You just have to be careful. Mine jump from my bed everyday and are fine b/c there is soft carpet to catch them and the bed isn't huge. But very high falls can hurt them significantly.

YORKIE_LEILA 05-11-2006 12:11 PM

wow.. I did not know that they were so fragile. Being that I have a 7 yr old and an almost 2 year old (which I do not allow the baby near Leila!!!) I have to set some rules to my 7 yr. old. Thank you guys for already being so helpful and all the information!

Sorry for your aunt and niece's loss.. *hugs*
