Need Your Help Please I have a neighbor that is interested in getting a toy yorkie like my Louie. I am trying to talk him out of it because he has very small children (3), both he and his wife work and worst of all he has NO patience (he's actually pretty mean). Can everyone please pitch in and post some disadvantages of owning a yorkie? Or can someone direct me to a site that shows how difficult it is to truly take care of these little guys? I am stressing to him that he has to do his research about the breed before he purchases one. So, I want a list of things to give to him to discourage him from getting this dog for his kids. I just know he would not be a good match for these little guys. Your help is much Appreciated. Thank you so much!!!!! |
Ahh it's really good of you to do this. I think you are doing very well so far and I don't think he would be suited to a yorkie either  . Maybe you could say that they are really hard to potty train, are picky eaters, inform him of the cost of vets bills (which he is likely to get if his children aren't careful). I dont know  .Just say whatever to stop him as there are enough poor little mistreated yorkies in this world :( |
The best one of all is to tell him it takes a long time to potty train yorkies and sometimes they never potty train |
Maybe you can send your Louie over there with instructions to destroy his house and tell your neighbor you are lending him Louie for a day so he can see how "horrible" it is to own a yorkie.;) In fact, I can send him Nikko and have him pee and poop all over his house and take chunks out of his walls the way he does at home. That will fix him good!!;) :D |

Maybe you could tell him that the Yorkies are bad with kids...tell him it will bite them....;) I will let Thor play with his children for one day then he won't be interested!!!! (Thor isn't so good with kids!) |
tell them that yorkies don't like to be left alone, they cry all night, and they are very costly. Also relate some of the sad stories that are on here about how easily they get injured. And suggest that he get a big one. |

I think the perfect excuse would be to say that yorkies are not good with kids. Tell him that yorkies are vey delicate and get annoyed with kids to the point of biting them. Tell him that his kids would probably enjoy a bigger dog more! |
Hmmm....Tell him......A very small Yorkie may have TRIPLE the vet costs because of extra precautions ..... Tell him - With Very Young Children - he will be taking a huge chance of his dog being hurt. Doors opening and closing is a HUGE danger to small dogs - they can easily be killed....Kids dropping them 0r falling on them can happen VERY easily..... and kids just can't be held responsible for that kind of thing. Tell Him - a Yorkie needs TONS of attention - they really don't like being left alone for long periods of time. If he really wants a great dog for children and that can handle being alone for longer periods of time - try a Shelter and let his kids go help choose one and they can learn how to save a dog. |
I don't think yorkies are any easier or harder to own than any other breed. Nor are they more or less expensive. If he wants one it's his business. Unless he has plans on doing harm to the dog I don't know why it's your concern. |
I will gladly send Duncan for the day. He is non stop and loves to play bite and chew-still at 13 months. |
LOL show him a picture of my thread...it's a blizzard in here... :) |
I came across this and thought about your post. It's a link to a very thorough questionaire about which breed is right for you so maybe if your neighbor takes it (and answers honestly) he will find another breed more suited to his situation. http://www.eukanuba.com/en_US/jhtmls...US&bc=E&pti=BS |
The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America has a lot of helpful information on their website. Just do a google search for yorkie rescue. Also, our rescue group. Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Network (www.yorkshireterrierrescue.net) has some information. Please, please, give him contact information for a yorkie rescue in case he does get the yorkie and decides not to keep it. YTRN will not adopt out to a family with small children because the children might hurt the yorkie unintentionally, and yorkies can be biters, and he doesn't sound as though he would be understanding of this at all. |
