I found something that finally works!!! Ok Parker will be 5 months old on the 21st of May. I had been having some trouble with potty training. I bought these bell things that you hang on the back door. They are called poochie bells (you can do a web search and find them). They are great. I started teaching Parker to ring the bell when we go outside to potty. I thought to my self, this will never work. It works!!!! He loves them. Within two days, he started ringing the bell himself. I also give him a cherrio when he potties outside and I make a big deal about it. Anyone having trouble. I strongly suggest them. They were only around 15.00. You could probably even make them. The bells are alot bigger then they look in the pic. I'll take a pic tonight and post it. I was using the belly bands alot now I dont really have too. I'm sooooo happy. |

Someone here had written about using bells before and said their dogs rang them everytime they had to go out. I am going to try it too. My Tobi is almost 5 months old also. He is really good if you take him out but doesn't really ask to go out. So consequently if I am not around the kids don't take him out regularly he will potty. How did you teach him to use it? Did you have him ring it them go out. I am curious. I wonder if you could teach an older dog? My Sophie is 2 1/2. |
2 Attachment(s) I was really happy how fast he caugh on. I would say lets go potty. I would go over to the door and ring then. He would jump up all excited and ring them his self, then I would take him out. Here is a pic from the site it shows what they look like, I'm at work or I'd take a pic of mine. They ship really fast too. They are super cute too. I ordered them to match the room. Our family room has the back door in it. My hubby has it decorated in the Indianapolis colts. so I ordered a striped blue one. Now he will go over and ring them and we take him outside. It helps too because you can hear them from several rooms away |
Thanks. I am going to try it. A small price to pay if it works. Hopefully the older one will catch on too. She doesn't like to be outdone by anyone so she will not let him outdo her, I hope! |
I googled poochie bells and found a bunch of places selling them. I am going to buy some and give them a try too. My dogs are both housetrained but they never let me know when they got to go |
I have heard of this before, I guess i will have to try this to! Thanks Denise for posting this! |

I havent had him playing with it. Only when he has to potty. Sometimes now if its been a while and he hasnt rang it, i will say lets go potty. He runs to the back door and stands there looking up at me. I'll say, What do we do....... And he will jump and get all excited and ring them. I'm really amazed how this had worked. I think if it worked for Parker it will work for all one. But praise them alot when they do it and give me a treat. I use cherrios because I dont want Paker getting fat from treats. I do have to be careful... Sometime he will go outside and act like he is squating but then comes right back up for the treat... I just look and him and tell him he's not fooling me so go pee pee potty for real. then he will after a few minutes. |
Wish I could buy some. Unfortunately, with two cats and a three year old preschooler, the bells would be rang all day long. My nerves can't handle that. Mattie figured out that if he jumps on us then runs across the room and stairs towards the kitchen that that is enough for us to get up and open the door for him. |
Joey rings a bell to go outside also. A 59 cent bell from the hobby store suspended on a string works just as well. |
I want to try this too but I'm afraid my Georgia will be afraid of the sound! To me a dog isn't really trained until they can communicate to you they have to go out to do their business so I love the idea of the bell. Has anyone who tried this had the problem of their pup being afraid of the bell? THANKS!! |
i wish lexi would potty outside.. you think i will be able to train her to do both. right now she only goes inside on wee pads, sometimes on the rug. |
I just hung "my bells" up yesterday - So, let's see what happens. Carol Jean |
