Yorkie can't whine (why complain, you ask?) Hi everyone! Hubby and I have a situation that is puzzling us....Topher...almost 7 months old...doesn't know how to make noise other than the odd bark or growl...he doesn't whimper, whine...nothing! If he wants to get our attention in a situation that may call for a whine...he barks...(now, don't ask me what situations may call for a whine as opposed to a bark...lol...I hope you know what I mean, 'cause I really don't think I can explain it!!):D Hubby heard him 'try' to whine once, but it came out kinda funny and he quit then barked a few times. He was brought up with lots of other yorkies till he was 17 weeks old, so I'm really puzzled as to why he can't make these noises. I guess I shouldn't complain. (Hubby says Topher is so spoiled that he's never had the need to whine:rolleyes: ...lol) Anyone else have a yorkie who makes 'very few' noises? |
Is his hearing OK? How about his trachea? |
His hearing seems to be fine (from what I can tell, anyway), and his bark sounds normal. His trachea is totally healthy as well. Hubby says it just seems that he doesn't know how....how that could be, I don't know. (?) I can't imagine how one could 'teach' a dog to whine..lol...I've taught dogs to 'speak' in the past, but never a specific noise!! :) I'm curious if this is something he'll learn over time or will he always have a limited vocabulary...I just don't know. |
maybe he has a problem wit his throat. You should take him to the vet and find out what the problem might be. |
Val, for GOODNESS SAKE!!!! No WAY!!!! Don't don't DON'T try to teach your pup to whine!! You will regret it every day of your life!!! Have you ever heard a kid whine? You know how annoying it is?? Trust me, puppy whines aren't a whole lot better!!! LOLOLOL:p Feel happy that your pup doesn't whine. Dreama whines when she is watching me make her dinner, and it's like fingernails on a chalkboard sometimes!!! |
My Petey Whines, and its horrible!! He whine when he can't get on the bed, whines when he can't get off the bed! Whine when he wants out of his cage, Basically whines for everything!!;) |
Come to think of it, Susan doesn't whine either, but I've never missed it. She makes her wants and needs known very clearly! She does make little grunts and gurgles and she barks and growls and sort of purrs. |
 Miss Mini was a quiet girl till 7 months old now she's driving me crazy with barking and whining for everything she wants ,good thing shes so darn cute! at 5 am her deciding to bark is not cute .I am in hopes its just a adolesant thing she'll outgrow .please spare me if it is not .hahaha She is a good girl most of the time. |
I guess I should thank my lucky stars that Topher is so quiet...he does let us know when he wants something by giving out a few barks, yet he never seems to go overboard with it. I was just missing the fact that he wasn't making any other noises... I have two teenagers, so I guess I should just relax and let their whining be enough for me!;) |
Mason doesnt whine either. He snorts and grunts..Im serious..he sounds like a pig when he wants to play. Ill try ignoreing him and hell start snorting and grunting until I get tired of listening to the lot of pigs in my livingroom!:D :D |

Chelsey NEVER whines, no idea why she doesnt, she always seems satisfied. Chanel is a different story, she whines for them both lol Chanel whines when: *I'm on the computer too long, she wants me off and i gotta sit with her. *She wants a treat. *She's tired. *She wants a toy from the bottom of the basket, dont try giving her another toy no no no she wants THAT toy. *She can't have things HER way. *She wants to be picked up. *She decides ive been on the phone long enough. *She wants to play and Chelsey doesnt. Believe me the list goes ON and ON... |
Oscar is the opposite - whines sometimes, but has never barked. He's so eerily quiet sometimes - really strange to play with a dog who doesn't bark or anything, just kinda snorts. The lack of him "communicating" with me when he wants/needs something has really taught me to be 'in tune' with his body language - to know when he needs to get off the couch to run to his pee pad or get a drink of water, know when he wants to play (that's an easy one!), etc. I doubt there's anything wrong with your pup at all - maybe he's just decided that plain old whining won't get his message across as well as a nice loud bark! |
Thanks everyone for your input...YT is certainly a wonderful place! I've learned so much from everyone and have had many worries eased from all the expertise available here. I was concerned, but I guess Topher just hasn't felt the need/desire to master the sound yet...or he finds that his bark gets him what he wants...OR...perhaps hubby is right and he's terribly spoiled and has had no need to whine...lol...!! It's probably a combination of all three. :) thanks again! |
