Silkies? Hi everyone! I am Melissa and I am new to the board. Well, not really new because I have lurked here on and off for a little while. I love Yorkies and I am seriously thinking about getting one. Every time I go to the pet store I go straight to see if a Yorkie is there waiting for me to love on! Yet, I don't like the idea of getting one from a pet store because I have my reasons. Anyway, enough babble.:D The main question I am wondering about is what is the difference between a Yorkie and a silky. Can a Yorkie be a silky or are they just a sub-classification of the breed? I tried searching on here and I think has something to do with their weight? I would also like to know the benefits of both? Thanks for any help.:) |
Hi Melissa. You don't live too far from me. I am in Chicago. Silky Terriers and Yorkshire Terriers are different in many ways. Here's is a little blurb: The Yorkshire Terrier is a dog with maximum weight of 6 pounds; it has much less muscle and body weight than a Silky Terrier, and is very refined in bone. They also have a more rounded, dome-shaped skull, large round eyes and a short muzzle. A Silky will have a longer, more wedge shape to the head with a flatter skull and an almond shape to the eye. The Silky will weigh approximately 10 pounds. Here's some more in depth info: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/yosiau.html |
Thank you! I knew I could trust someone on here more so than some random website I wasn't sure of.:D |
Silkies Hi there. Here in NZ they're called australian or sydney silkies cos they were originally bred in Sydney, Australia, by crossing Australian terriers with Yorkies. Silkies got recognised as an official separate breed ages ago. A good dog encyclopaedia will give you all the good points of each breed. Yorkies are generally smaller, softer coated and have round baby doll faces. But they are both terriers and have terrier instincts and terrier energy levels. Your local library might also have books on different breeds. I find a little research goes a long way when researching a breed. Cos every breed has its downside as well as lovely side! |
