Urrr....Okay, have had enough. Any advice?
 

Okay. So my Yogi has started the "catch me if you can" game. He really only does it when he has something in his mouth that he shouldn't have or even worse, when he is outside.

This morning, I had him outside in the backyard. He is out there a lot and I usually don't have a problem with him. It's fenced in but he's never out there alone because he's tiny and I know that he will find a place to get out, eventually. He was running around, found a stick, (I don't like him to chew on sticks because I'm worried about the splinters). I called his name and started walking towards him. He takes off!!!! Found a place in the fence he could get through and he's gone:eek: ! I run around to the gate and proceed to spend the next 20 minutes trying to get him. He doesn't go out of our yard but he hides under our cars:mad: where I can't get to him. I'm outside at 6:30 in the morning, in my pj's and bathrobe, trying to catch my dog!!

Anyone else have this issue? Any advice on how to stop this soooo not fun game of "catch me if you can"? He doesn't it in the house, too. It's gotten so bad that every time I (or anyone else in the family) , try to get him because he has something in his mouth, like my husband's sunglasses this morning, he takes off and we have to team up to catch him. It's obvious that he is enjoying himself and thinks it's fun, but we are sooo not amused around here!

I've been a unwilling participate in chase. It was maddening. Ramsey has not yet learned this game, thankfully, but my first yorkie, Trace, was a champion player. He didn't do it because he had something you wanted though....he just liked you to chase his butt.

Some will tell you to teach him the command drop. So he'll drop whatever he has. To teach drop....offer a treat in replace of the object...you want them to think what YOU have is BETTER than what they have. Eventually they're drop whatever on command. HTH.

Had that issue and had to start leaving the short training leash on Brody when he was inside. He would run from us when he had something he wasn't supposed to have or if we told him No no or whatd you do. We started doing it to leash train him and noticed he was a much better behaved yorkie with it on than without. If he get out of line now all we have to do is step on the leash. Never have a problem. He has only had a couple of times when he got stuck...hehe It sure doesn't slow him down.:p

Every little pup has this problem. Coco used to do it but now she's mastered the STOP command. When I say stop, she drops everything from her mouth and just freezes. What I would suggest is use a long leash outside, and teach him the STOP or STAY command. Keep using the command and when he does, give him a treat and praise him, then do it again. Keep doing it until you feel comfortable trying it with no leash and he will learn. Good luck.

If I cannot get close enough to get Wosie to drop something, I call HER, and run like heck to the hallway bathroom!! She chases after ME, and I shut the door when she runs in! That way, I have her cornered and she HAS to drop what she's got, lol!

We've gone through this with Jaxon too. Today my hubbie was watering some plants outside and Jaxon was on the front step. He doesn't go down the stairs (yet) so normally we don't have to worry. Jaxon was watching a bee or bird or something and ended up falling down the stairs. Hubbie tried to grab him and he took off around the back. He spent about 10 minutes chasing after him as well. Not fun. :mad:

I'm hoping this is something he'll outgrow - I keep joking that he's in his teenager phase (7.5 months).

Nobella's advise is just what I would have said. We don't have that problem but that's the advise I've seen given here many times. Tatum will actually pick something up right in front of you just because she knows you're watching and then do a very dramatic slinking tip-toe walk away just so we'll laugh at her. Then she'll drop it like "ha-ha, made you look!". Don't mean to brag too much but for some reason she's never been one to pick up little things that she shouldn't. I fuss at my kids all the time to not leave little things laying around because she might try to eat it but for some reason, she just doesn't. The only time she plays chase is with a toy of hers when we want to participate. We're really lucky with that issue!

Stop, stay and come are very, very important commands to try to teach. They have come in handy in a few emergency what could have been dangerous situations with Tatum. I tell you, once you master those commands, you'll just swell with pride when they obey you the first time in an emergency situation. I know I did! No, it's not aways easy - sometimes really damn hard - to teach these but you'll have a better dog for it!

:D That's a great solution in a pinch!! Reverse psychology in the works, huh?? :D

Sometymes it's take more than a hour to cath him !!!
I am try to learn him all the comands, but no luck :(
I did it very easy with my first dog...but yorkie is just a disaster...he doesn't want to listing, and only do what he want to do.

Thanks soooo much for all the great advice. At least I know I'm not the only one!! I will definitely start trying to train him with the commands. We are starting "yorkie boot camp" first thing in the morning!:D The whole family is going to join in!

In the house, my pup will run with something in his mouth that he wants to keep.....but, I can catch him. He knows what "stay" means and though he doesn't really come to a dead stop, when I start saying "stay" -- it really slows him down.

My pup doesn't pick up much outside - there isn't much around that he can pick up. So, I don't have much of a problem outside.

You need to really go around your yard - and get it "fixed" so that your Yorkie can't get out. That would solve that problem!

You HAVE to be stern with him! I have 2 voices for Kloey, the fun and baby talk voice, and the mad mommy voice, believe it or not, she knows the difference, when I use to mad mommy voice, she will crunch down and crawl to her time out spot, I'm serious, she really does this, all I have to do is say her name in the mad mommy voice and she goes to her time out until I use my happy voice.
