How to introduce a new puppy into the home??
 
We have a 9 month old male and are contemplating getting another puppy about a month from now. Our Cody gets a lot of attention and I am wondering if it is problematic to get another puppy or will he enjoy the company. If anyone has advice on "How To" introduce another dog into the household I would appreciate hearing your advice. Thank You!!

I'm sure there's lots of things you can do but the first thing we did when we brought our second pupppy home was to hold him facing us and let our older dog sniff his little fanny! Dogs as you know are smell centered and this is a good way to let him sniff out the little pups scent. For the first few days before we put the puppy down we held her and did the same routine. Are you going to see the puppy a few times before you buy him/her or are you going to buy him the first time you see him? If you buy him after you have seen him a couple of times then this is what you could do. On your very first visit take a towel with you and rub it over the puppy to get the puppy's scent on it. Do the same with your dog. Switch towels or atleast give your dog the towel with the puppy's scent on it. This will get your dog use to the scent so that when you bring the pup home it will be some what familiar to him. When you bring the pup home you can let them interact with each other as long as you are supervising them. Watch your dog's reaction and body language to see what your dog thinks of the pup. You should be able to tell whether your dog is delited to have the new pup or if he is not to crazy about the idea. You shoulden't have any problems just remember to keep a close eye on them. : )

ceeby was five months old when I got Silk who is five. I just put her down with him and after Silk got adjusted to our home they became great friends. Play all the time. There was never a problem between the dogs. Silk didn't like our home at first. Then about three months ago, I got Dixie who was nine weeks at the time. I just put her down in the floor with Ceeby and Silk and off they went playing. Silk thinks she is her baby. Ceeby got a little jealous at first because after all, she was now the baby. he let us know he was jealous by snubbing us but was never mean to "the baby". They are all great friends. I had no problems at all.

This method worked very well when we got Baxter. On our first visit to the breeder, she gave us a towel that Baxter had been laying on. We brought it home to Snickers and repeatedly mentioned Baxter's name while letting him smell the towel. Said things like, 'Baxter's coming', etc.. When we finally brought Baxter home 2 weeks later, Snickers was a little cautious at first, and it took about 2 days for him to adjust. We only put them together when we supervised. Snickers was 11 mos. and we made sure he understood that he was top dog. Always went out the door first, fed him first, etc. A year later they are best buddies and Baxter understands his position in the 'pack'. Good luck!
