Coughing for 6 weeks? An extension of my first post . Cocos cough has been off and on for 6 weeks now. Shes had antibiotics before . Didn't help much . thought it was mostly gone on it's own for a while , now picking back up again. Anyone have a similar story? She's 4 months old tomorrow. |
Kennel cough is actually viral so the antibiotics really don't help to get rid of it only to prevent complications. Her immune system must overcome it. Honey will soothe her throat. I would look into adding Vitamin C (200 mg per day divided into 3 doses) and Echinacea (a couple of liquid drops in her food twice a day) to boost her immune system. |
My vet's office said that their office along with every other vet office in our town and surrounding towns (at least the ones that were represented at a recent seminar that they went to) were talking about this very thing. Seems that this region especially (Tennessee & Ohio Valleys) have had an abundance of unexplained long duration dry cough in small breeds. It's not kennel cough, it's not due to infection. Noone has figured out what it is or why it's happening. I have had it come and go throughout my house several times this winter and at the time I think I've got it licked, here it comes back again! It's exasperating as it's the only symptom that the little ones have gotten. No runny nose, no sneezing, no itching, no diarrhea, no lethargy, no hyperactivity, no nothing....just coughing, dry hacking cough. Don't know what it is, I sometimes wonder if it's just that they're really really sensitive electric heat and how dry the air gets when it's on. Total speculation. |
Forget Bordetella How about there might be something structurally wrong w/ your puppy? Have them take a look at her airway in a complete exam. This doesn't sound like anything viral or bacterial to me. No other symptoms? |
it took rocky almost 2 months to get rid of his cough,he went to the vet several times and for check ups, and he was on several meds, but now is all better :) I would say keep in contact with your vet . Good luck:) Hugs |
Sissy developed an upper respiratory infection following her bordatella vaccine. She was on two doses of antibiotics cause the 1st didn't do much. With the 2nd dose the vet also gave her a steriod which helped the cough and finally she was better after about 4 weeks. |
Cali and my pom had it for over 3 months and my Pom still has a little cough. I just kept taking them in to check their lungs and temperature. |
Gypsy had it. (and I am in TN) they finally did a throat wash and found different strains of bacteria. She has not coughed in over a week now. And believe me, we are all listening for them. She was on 3 different antibiotics at different times and also children's cough medicine and a vaporizer was used. Knock on wood, it is over with. Going back to vet's tomorrow. edited to add: She has only had 2 shots since 8wks old cause of it. So we have not taken her many places plus can not get groomed yet. I am not good at it so I can not wait to take her. |
