Help! Romeo ate a chocolate bunny Romeo and Belle(our new Yorkie) ate about a 1/4 of a chocolate Easter bunny. I would guess about 2 or 3 oz. Romeo weighs 4 pounds and Belle weighs 6 1/2 pounds. The bunny was made from milk chocolate, not dark. Does anyone have any advice? Should I try to reach our vet(I'm not even sure I can today)? Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me. |
I think they will be fine. They might get a little diahrea at the most but I think that will be it. Chachi has gotten ahold of those chocolate eggs before and he was fine. |
Hi, well I would just keep an eye on them, I'm sure that will be easy, thats all we do all day anyway :) No really, try not to worry, they say Chocolate is really bad for furbabies, but I have known many who did the same thing and were fine. Princess was one of them, she took a box of Godiva off my table and ate two pieces when she was a puppy. I took her in, and our Vet said she would be OK, just to make sure to keep it out of her reach. Make sure they drink lots of water, they might have loose po's tomorrow, but they should be fine. Someone else may be able to help you a little more, So I hope they log on soon. Please keep us posted. :) |
Here's a link. I would only be a little concerned if I thought the 4 pounder ate all of the 3 oz. by himself. http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/nutr...latetoxici.htm |
i have a romeo too!!! he luvs chocolate too! i read that american milk chocolate is not as toxic to dogs as dark or european chocolate. it is mostly milk, sugar and preservatives. not a high concentration of chocolate. keep an eye on them. i would watch for bad runny poopy or dehydration. |
My lab ate two batches of chocolate chip cookies (probably 50 or 60 cookies) one night while I was sleeping. He just stood up to the kitchen counter and ate them all but one that he couldn't reach. Then he proceeded to have diarrhea and threw up all over the house. This is what I woke up to. We needn't worry about what the chocolate (and other rich ingredients) might have done to him - because I was ready to kill him anyway. But - later that same day - he was back to his old self looking for some more cookies to eat. Please realize that he ate two bags of chocolate chips - two pounds of butter, flour, and everything else that went into the cookies.....not just chocolate. I don't think part of "one little bunny" will faze your dog. You may get a little diarrhea - but that's to be expected...and that may not even happen. Good luck! Carol Jean |
My vet called me back and said just about the same things. She said it was too late to make them throw up and to watch them closely for a few days. She worries about liver damage but said milk chocolate is not nearly as dangerous. Belle has thrown up twice already but Romeo is acting like his usual self. I am guessing that Belle ate most of it because she is a little pig and does not like to share (lol). Thanks for all the responses and I will let you know how they are doing tomorrow. |
