ringing bells to go out All three of my yorkies ring a bell when they want to go out.I put 2 large christmas bells from walmart on the door knob, hanging from a ribbon about 3 inches off the floor. It works great and they all kinda just trained theirself. They paw at the bells and I can hear them no matter where I am in the house. |
That sounds awesome. I'm glad it's working for you  |
How old are your dogs? and what were their ages when they started ringing the bells??? How long did it take before they were reliable with the bell ringing... I know a lot of people have really wanted to teach this to their Yorkies... So as someone who has had sucess with it.... Tell us everything!!!! Thanks!! |
Oscar just goes to the door and barks, and barks and barks until someone lets him outside. He is relentless with it too...he will MAKE you listen to him! I have heard a lot of folks having great success with the bell tho...works wonders if you can train your dog to use it...I can hear a bark better than I can hear a bell tho...LOL |
That is so cool. :yorkiesar |
I've really been wanting to start this at my house and now that I have two - I am definitely going to try it. My older one only barks if she has to poop -otherwise she just stands at the door looking over her shoulder? why? I don't know. |
very cool! |
I have a Bichon that walks over to the door - sits there looking out for a minute - and then walks off. (If you don't noticed this little gesture - too late!) Really - this is all he does if he wants to go out. And, I think my little Yorkie is starting to come to me and whine or bark if he wants to go out. I hope this is what he's doing it for. Anyway, when he does it - I take him out and he always pees. But, he always pees when I take him out anyway! I just ordered a bell....going to give it a try. Wish us luck! Carol Jean |
wow thats great, i wish that would Work for my dogs LOL you are so lucky hehe :animal-pa |
I am trying to teach my dogs this. So far, they just kinda look at me like 'mommy, why are you making that noise'???....I am gonna keep trying though. With 4 dogs, I think it would be a blessing to have that available. |

Parker is 4 months old and I just order him a bell thing for the door to try to teach him they are called poochie bells. they are really cute. I hope he catches on. My friend has one and her dog caught on really fast. We'll see if it will work for Parker... If so it will be really neat! I'm not sure of the exact web site but you can do a search for poochie bells and find them. |
That is WAY COOL:exclaim: Before I got Sweet Pea, Sebi would bark to go out, but lil Miss Sweet Pea isn't much of a talker when it comes to going out so we put in a doggy door. It works great they can let themselves in and out with no problem. Although we did have to make a platform, they are to little to jump from the patio and reach the door. LOL Don't you just love Yorkies!! |
Pippa just sits by the door expecting you to notice that she wants out......but she will bark to be let back in |
we ring bells at our house...I just trained Chance and it took about 2 weeks. I have an older boy that is 3 and I did not train him but sometimes he will ring the bell just from watching chance i guess. When chance rings the bell I always praise him. |

We didn't try the bell but we tried the doggie doorbell thing that they step on to make it "woof" or ring like a doorbell. Maybe we didn't try diligently enough but Tatum never picked up on it. Tatum would also just sit at the door not making a sound and if you missed it, your fault! Fortunately she has finally started talking to us about going out. At my MIL's house where we were living while building our new house, you couldn't see the door she would sit at from anywhere else in the house so I think that was the main problem. Finally a few months ago she started sitting at the door (in our new house) and doing the "talking growl". Now she even will come sit at your feet and give you a "yip" if you don't hear her growl at the door. I'm so excited but this has been a very long process! |
Sydney is only 5 1/2 months old and has already caught on to ringing a bell to let you know that she needs to go outside. If you don't come quick she beats at the bells!!!!! |
