marking photos ??? I was reading what whispersmom wrote about someone using one of her pup's pictures in a scam. I was wondering, does it help prevent the problem if you write something across the picture? Or is it easy to erase? I know some of you are quite talented in this area, what are your thoughts? Thanks. |
As a professional photographer, there is always the risk of someone lifting an image off an Internet site. Watermarking is the only way to deter the situation. Is it foolproof -- probably not but does help. It is a shame that it happens and that it forces you to mark your image making it less clear for those to see that you want to share with. :( |
This happend more often then you think. There was a yorkie breeders site that .Iwas on and they actually said on there that a another breeder was using her pics of her female that she was selling and saying it was hers. Its pretty scary to think your purchasing a certian puppy only to find out its another breeders litter. Thats why Im glad I found a breeder that is close enough for me to go see in person. |
i too usually put my website name across my pictures, or on them in the pictures.. it really sucks when people steal your photos and try to make money off of it, or claim them as theirs, i think that's the worst - using the pictures pretending your selling them! those people are evil! plus i've had to deal with this from way before.. with pictures of myself!! being taken off the internet and used as someone elses.. :mad: |
I sometimes take photos off the Internet to show others... for example, in my quest for a Biewer, I search and save photos on my hard drive -- but only to use in the event I actually go through with it; I want some photos to show what I want (like Erin's Gus Gus) My graphic designer friend took all of his wedding photos off of a site and took off all the watermarks. Sorry to peeve any photographers on here. He didn't sell enough photos, so he didn't get his wedding album for free. I used to put a mark on my photos, but now I don't. I do not see the point in it. I mean, for example... Erin, if you put your e-mail address or soemthing across Gus' photo, I could just go right over it and put mine. It's kind of scary to think about, especially with photos of children. I know of a bunch of instances where young girls 14 or 15 stole photos of babies from babiesonline.com and made webpages pretending that they were their own babies. the point? Not sure. |
Photographers are always the subject of copyright infringement. If we worry about it constantly it will only disrupt our creativity. I use online proofing instead of giving hard proofs. Everyone has access to scanners so I decide to take my chances on online proofing instead. I actually had a senior this year that was trying to demand proofs. I informed her straight up that the reason I don't do hard copy proofs is because I don't want to be ripped off. She wasn't happy. The same day she made the demand, I increased the visibility of the watermark on her photos. I prefer a no sale than a $100 order so she can copy my work. On the other hand . . . I take hundreds of photos of sports and donate the digital images to the school for use in their yearbook without compensation. It is my way of giving back to the community. Okay -- off my soapbox . . . Point is -- if you post it online, chances are the images will be lifted. Some people could care less if there is a logo across the image and its printed on plain copy paper. :) |
Carters Mom - I think that its defniitely better to do the online proof thing. If you wanted to blow it up to a 4x6, the quality is not good enough online. What is watermarking? I agree that its horrible to misrepresent images as your own or hire a photographer and then not buy the pictures they took, but from my story of the person who took the wedding album... the guy was explaining it as "I am in the pictures, so they are mine". Pretty stupid if you ask me, especially if the photographer is basing his income solely on the SALE of the pictures and not charging by the hour. |
Thanks. I had a feeling marking them wouldn't really stop someone who was determined. People are so sneaky. I hate the thought of someone using my pictures to take advantage of people. :( |
Watermarking embeds a digital signal in text, image, audio or video files, which may contain information and proof of rights to a product's owner or publisher. www.europe4drm.com/l_menue/glossary/glossary.htm That said, people can steal still your photos, and edit them a little bit or crop them or whatnot to avoid the watermarking. If you put any picture on the Internet, there's not too much a skilled Photoshopper can't do to clean it up. |
