Can Yorkies get human stomach virus? I am a first time Yorkie owner. My Yorkie, Bachee, is 11 months old. He just threw up twice today. Is it possible for Yorkies to catch a human stomach virus? Several of my family members and friends who have been to my house have been sick with the stomach virus this week and Bachee was around them. Is this normal? Should I panic yet? I need some advice before I start panicking and call the vet. |
They say they can't catch human viruses but I swear my dogs have occassionaly been sick when I was. Is he lethargic or not eating? I would call your vet to be safe. Good luck I hope he feels better soon. |
i don't know if they can catch it from us or not but I have almost lost Ceeby three times from a "stomach virus". I guess it was the doggie kind because no one here has had it. I had to take him to the vet yesterday, diarrhea and some vomiting for three days. i got the vomiting to stop and he started eating well so I didn't rush right to the vet with him but yesterday his stool turned bloody and out the door we went, poopy butt and all. he pooped on me in the van on the way. i was ashamed at how poopy smelly and dirty he was. he got antibiotics and a shot. Plus they checked for parasites and found none. We have been well since we got home and even had regular formed stool today already. These little ones go down so fast it is scary. Ceeby has been so delicate that I feel like an old pro at this stuff. he was not dehydrated but has lost from 3.9 back to 3.4lb. the vet said he will probably be like this all his life because he is so frail. These other two yorkies have never had even one sick day. |
I hope Ceeby feels better. I just noticed Bachee is shivering now so I am calling the vet. I will let you know what happens. Gotta go. |
Here's an answer to my own question: I called the vet and he said dogs usually don't catch human virus so it might have been something he ate. He also told me not to give him food and for water just give him ice for tonight and see how he feels tomorrow. As of right now he is sleeping and not vomiting anymore. Thanks for the advice Patti and Sugar's Mom. |
My dog Maggie started getting sick just a few days after my whole family had the flu. I asked the vet about it and she said that sometimes dogs can get the bug and feel sick, maybe just not as bad as humans??? I don't know if that's true or not but everything else she has said has been right on so maybe that is too. |

Dogs do not catch the flu, colds, or other human diseases from us.....not do we catch diseases that are common to different animals. There is what is called a "species barrier." This means that diseases that are common to one species are usually not caught by other species. There are some few diseases that have mutated so that a mutated form can be contracted by another species, but this usually never happens. Carol Jean |
