Leash during day? Dutch is quite a jumper. I finally figured out that he's escaping the gated kitchen by jumping the 5 foot gate! I saw him do it, it's incredible. Anyway he is not sufficiently trained to have run of house, so I have to do something. Rather than leaving him in the crate all day and risking a housetraining accident in there, I am wondering if anyone has had success using a leash to confine by day? It would give him enough slack to get into the crate if he wants to sleep, get to the bathroom, and move around enough to play with his toys, but not enough that he can get to a dangerous part of the house. Does anyone have experience with this? Are there safety issues to concern myself with regarding leaving him attached to the fridge handle during the day? Any thoughts are helpful. |
I would never leave a dog leashed unsupervised. If they twist enough and tangle it could be dangerous. I would get an X-pen with a top so he can't jump out. Good Luck. |
My neice left her dog tied near it's doghouse [outside dog] and it jumped onto the doghouse and slid off the other side and hung itself! I know that was probably just a "freak accident" and it happened years ago, but it still makes me sick to my stomach every time I think about it! I would be afraid to restrain Dutch that way and leave him unattended for very long. If your kitchen has just a one door entrance, perhaps a "Dutch" door [half door] would work? CC's suggestion of an X-pen with a top is good. |
My aunt did that with her shih tzu after I told over and over again not to do it. Then one day, he jump on something and the leash got tangled and he jump off and he got strangled(hunged) to death. So please don't do it. |

We had a dog as well that we kept outside on a leash for shorter periods of times, (not more than an hour) While she was outside see became excited at something and tried chase it. Next thing we knew she fell through one of our window wells near the basement, not a big drop but big enough to do damage. When she fell through the leash broke her neck. We were actully home at the time and saw her fall, ran upstairs but it was still to late to do anything, she died within minutes. It was very tramatic for us all as we never imagined such a horrible thing could happen. I was 16 and it was my first experiance with losing a pet. I would never reccomend people use tie ups ever. I wont do it even for a few minutes. You would be heart broken to come home and find out a tragidy happened. It took a long time for us to even consdier owning another dog agian, because we all blamed ourselves for the accident. |
I agree with everyone here...it's too dangerous. Last summer when I was outside gardening, I kept hearing a noise and went to investigate. It was a dog who was in chain-link kennel who had jumped over the top and was not able to move because of his tight leash which was tangled in the fence. I immediately went down there and got him loose and he thanked me with puppy kisses. He was a rather large dog and thank goodness for that because he was able to stand rather than be hung. If you can't find something to contain your dog in, how about putting pee pads in a small room without carteted floors...like maybe a bathroom. Good luck...please don't try the leash unless you're there to supervise! |
no-no Get an pen with a top..2x3 with a grate floor is good..you will never regret it. He may cry at first, but all dogs need to be pen trained. |
I agree with everyone else. A leash or any kind of a tie is just not worth the risk. Better safe than sorry. |
