On again off again Hello. Our Millie is 1 year 5 mos old and is a very energetic and apparently healthy 3 lb. 5 oz. jewel. She is scheduled for spaying in two weeks and I am so scared. I brought her in today for another look see by her vet and he thinks she's fine to go (he was waiting for the right time as she went into heat over our Christmas vacation). He said that he would extract the teeth and spay her at the same time so she is only put under one time. Any experiences you can share to calm my nerves would be great. Also, have you noticed that your baby gained weight after being spayed/neutered? I am so freaked out about the anesthesia and her recovery. He mentioned that she would have a body stocking on (which would cause her hair to get matted). Any advise or experience with that? Thank you so much for your advice. BTW, I love Yorkie Talk. This is my first post. I have read and learned so much from everyone. With your help, Millie is now on Royal Canine and off people food. Of course she gets people snacks (carrots, apples, she loves mango, bananas, broccoli), but for the most part she gets her food not ours. :animal-pa |
I would recommend having a pre-anesthesia test done. |
I agree with Lacy's Mom. Alos I would try and comb her out a little each day. I had a onesies on Cali and didn't think to comb her and she was a mess. A great groomer got out all the mats for me. Cali started eating better a couple of weeks after she was spayed but I don't think there is a correlation. I am going to start cutting back a little on her food as she doesn't need the same amount now. Good luck, she will be fine. I know I waited and Cali came into heat and they ended up spaying her while in heat because of a possible intestinal blockage. She had a huge incision because of that and she did fine. She weighs 4lbs. |
Welcome to YT.. I happen to have a little girl named Millie, who is also getting spayed in 2 weeks. She's 3 1/2 lbs and I getting worried because she is so small. But my Vet assured me that everything should turn out well. Good luck to you and Millie !! |
Definitely get the pre-anesthesia blood work up done. I highly recommend coming home with pain meds and attempting to restrict activities for a few days following. Sissy was 6 months and just over 3 lbs when she was spayed along with having 4 teeth extracted. Her incision was only about 1 1/2" long with internal stitches only and no body stocking. Her coat is short, so I didn't have to worry about matting. The next day you wouldn't have known she had anything done!! She has gained a little more weight since then, but doesn't seem extreme. Everything will be fine, but you will be a wreck until she is back to normal. We totally understand. |
Welcome to Yorkietalk. I understand how you feel.My baby Holly--3lbs,6 months-was spayed on Monday.I was a wreck and asked so many questions. Thanks to Yorkietalk I knew the right things to ask for and my vets were superb. She had pre-op blood tests done-interesting to see the results. She had her general, and had a drip in too to make sure she was stable. She had a post-op pain injection. She has 3 stitches-outside-and a really small incision. They made such a fuss of her and phoned me as soon as she woke up. She has been really sleepy since Monday, but tonight is running around wanting to play and getting back to her usual lively self.We had a 48 hr check last night and every thing is healing well.No body stocking, but I had to get her a special headcollar the first evening as she tried to bite her stitches. She only wore it for an hour as she was so miserable-I just held her on my knee and stopped her worrying them. She has eaten a little fairly often since the op and toilets ok in the garden-I have been carrying her out til today. Too early to tell about weight gain, but I am hoping so as she is so tiny. I am glad now it is all over and looking forward to our first walk post-op when her stitches are out! good luck and I am sure everything will be fine! PS When I picked her up she looked so strange as her ears were flat down, she was feeling bad. They soon perked up the next day! |
She'll be fine, don't worry! My little girl was spayed at the age of 4 months and did wonderful. I don't have experience the the body sleeve though. I would just say to take it off morning and evening to brush her. Spice also just had her two upper canine deciduous teeth removed about a month ago. No problems what-so-ever! It took her until morning to be herself. Such a tiny little dog (3.6lbs) and anesthesia keeps them pretty groggy all day. She'll do great... :) |
