Runs away from me I know this may sound weird, maybe not, but every time I reach to pick up Buttercup, he runs and tries to hide from me. Not only me, my husband and my son as well. Is it because he is no longer with his littermates (he is 11 weeks) or is there something that I'm doing wrong? He is completely potty trained (at least I think he is) but when I come near him he pees right then and there. Need advice! |
Well picture something 50 times bigger than you reaching down to grab you. It would be a little frightening. How long have you had him? Do you know if he was well socialized by the breeder? Try getting down to his level and letting him come to you and then offering a treat, and don't make quick moements. I'm guessing he is just a little shy, but he may have been hit by someone. |

Same Problem It's funny you wrote this because my Daisy is the same way. I don't know why she acts this way because as well as your breeder..She came from a wonderful breeder and was never mistreated in anyway. I think and believe in our case that just may be part of there personality...I am sorry I can't help, but atleast you are not alone. |
He just has a submissive personality. Crouch down on his level and don't stare at him, let him come to you. Then reward with praise and a treat. The urination is also showing submissiveness. A sensitive dog requires patience. Any action you do that shows dominance will only increase his submissiveness. Try to do everything you can to socialize him because in some dogs fear turns into aggression. |
From my personal experience, I had the same thing happen to me with Coco. I don't think it's necessarily because they got hit or abused, I think they are just so small and are rightfully scared sometimes. Even though they are trusting, they are still learning that you wont hurt them. Coco used to run away but would run back with in 5 seconds. I think it's just a fun puppy thing, because it gets them excited and running and they see you trying harder so it may just be a game. Don't worry after a few months they get over this. It's kind of like a human child's stage of fear of strangers. |
Georgie tries to jump up on the couch if I am sitting there and then when I go to pick him up he runs. He does this with everyone, and my neices Yorkie Oliver did this as well when he was a puppy. I think it's because they want you to chase them :D Usually when he does that I get someone else to sneak attack him and put him up with me or I get on the floor with him and play :D I think it's just because Buttercup is a puppy it's not you at all. Oliver doesn't do that anymore and George doesn't do it as often. Don't worry I am sure he is not scared he is just a baby and will come around. ;) |
Thanks for everyone's advice |
:wavey: I think Buttercup just needs time to adjust to his new home. Before long he's going to be up on your lap checking out all the YT pictures! :) :) :) |
