Yorkie and our Cats! We bought our first Yorkie on Friday night. An cute little AKC Registered (see Avatar) boy, 6 months old. He is the best little dog with a GREAT personality. Loves to relax and has the housetraining well on the way... HOWEVER, we have two cats that we've had for about 8 years. And Sir Max Dante has quite an outburst everytime they see each other. This is day 5 and there has been no signs they will ever co-exist. Any thoughts or suggestions? |
I think he just needs time. My Jewels used to chase our cat and bark at her. We would get after her every time she did it and now Checkers the cat can come down without being chased. There are people on here that Yorkies play with their cat. That will never happen in my house but at least the cat isnt tormented anymore |
Give the cats their own room. Block off a room with a baby gate and keep the cats food, water, & litter in there that way they have a safe place to relax and get away from the pup for a bit. Something that is working with my dog is when the cat is in the room I gently lay my hand on him and tell him that it's okay kitty's in the room. You have to show the pup that the cat is part of the pack and not to be messed with. |

Madison tries to groom our cats, it's quite funny. Just try and make sure that your little yorkie can't get in the litter box. They sometimes LOVE to eat cat litter and it could cause stomach upset. Good luck! |
Welcome to yorkietalk! Congrats on your baby! I dont have cats so I dont have any advice to give you! |

I have three cats-one who ran away from the puppy, one who was disdainful and affronted and one-the youngest-who was curious. I started with the curious one and gave them treats together-chicken and ham, The cat has an insatiable appetite. He actually helped my pup to eat! He had to learn not to chase the pup in tha garden at night and bowl her down. They are now the best of friends. They will even share a basket together. The aloof cat tolerates her and will sleep on the bed at the same time-but at the other side. The nervous cat is still nervous, but will sometimes sit in front of the heater while she is in the same room! Progress, but it took about a month to settle down. The curious cat is very much the alpha animal in our house-he eats first and gets the best spots! |

Wow...that's Tough |
It is tough. Seems like overnight one of the two cats may have softened....believe it or not. Today they stood nose to nose sniffing until the cat hissed, and it was all over from there. But they got close...and they were quite for a little while anyway. The other cat makes me nervous. Actually not the cat, the situation. This little Mad Max of ours I think could take that cat down and I'm half convinced he will shred her if he gets hold of her. That's what makes me feel REALLY bad. |

My daughter's 4 year old cat (a LARGE ragdoll) has been staying with us for 6 weeeks now. Sissy looks incredibly small next to the cat!! Anyway, from day one Sissy jumps at her, bites her ear and likes to nibble on her collar. Princess will swipe her front paw at her (no claws) and make noise at her. Sissy thinks it is all a game and apparently loves to have Princess swipe her across the head! When Princess gets tired of the play/abuse she jumps up where Sissy cannot get to. Give them time and perhaps the cats will "play", too. |
Give them some time. We have a siamese and the first night she was curious but didn't do much to him. The second day on she was mean as hell...she was hissing so bad that I had to check if we had another dog around. Just let them be but monitor if your kittys are not declawed. After three or four days April accepted him and they are pals now. She plays with him non-stop and if she gets tired she runs off to the basement or the second floor of the house where he is not allowed to roam as yet. Good luck and just let them be. It will work itself out. |
1 Attachment(s) check out this pic ..its the sweet Mini chasing the CAT~ :animal-pa |
OK....so did sweet Mini eventually eat the cat or have they decided to be friends?? |
Well it may sound mean and others may hate me but honestly if the cat has claws you probably have nothing to worry about. One good swipe and that's probably all its going to take. I don't remember exactly how our two cats handled Reagan when she first came home but I can say that they didn't like her. I'm sure Reagan got swatted a couple of times. Now the cats tolerate her. They will let her come up and lick on them a little bit and one of them will even play with her once in a blue moon. I have three large dogs and whenever we get them out to play in the front yard one of our cats who thinks she has to be in the middle of everything will come out to see what's going on. Well sometimes the dogs leave her alone and sometimes one of them will get excited and if one of them gets excited they all do. They've circled her before on a few occassions and she always gets out without a problem. You will want to watch them I'm not saying you don't have to. You don't want some major cat/dog fight and one of them to get hurt but the cat does know how to take care of itself. Plus the cat could scratch the dogs eye so do watch them, but just to ease your mind the cat probably won't get eaten. And like several have said they will learn to jump on a chair or bed or such to get away. |

Omg....That looks just like my cat Sasha!!! She is friends with Cindy too. But Sasha will sometimes slap her around if she gets to ruff or if she just doesent know when to stop.lol. Sasha's declawed tho so she wont hurt her. (Declawed before we got her.) I was in pet smart in muncie the other day and I saw a little yorkie blind in one eye, sooo sad, when I asked what had happened the lady said her cat scratched him poor thing. :( |
Dog/Cat Relations 3 Attachment(s) Here is how the royal rumble goes at my house. You can see my two year old refereeing the play with our siamese cat April and Lex. April hated Lex for a bit until she got used to him. She was front declawed a while back but she has her back claws. So she will swipe at him and she can quick fast scratch him with those and she will nip him if he is nipping too hard on her to let him know to back off. |
