Okay...need help making a decision...I need voices of experience! Hi! I hope I can get some help making this decision! We've had Topher for a few months now (our very first yorkie) :aimeeyork and hubby and I are positively in love with this breed! We are VERY seriously considering getting another ...not sure exactly when, but it's pretty definite that we will have another pup in our lives before the year is out. (If I had my way it would be sooner  , but hubby thinks we should hold off till Topher is a little older.) We're just not sure whether we should get Topher a brother or a sister. In your experience...those of you with more than one yorkie...which would Topher get along with better...or would it make any difference? He's 6.5 months old now and has the most lovely temperament. He weighs around 9lbs and seems to have stopped growing...or at least really slowed down. He's due to be neutered on May 2. I'm curious as to your opinions....all the experience on this board is priceless! thanks in advance! :) |
In my experience, two dogs of the opposite sex usually get along better than two dogs of the same sex. You just have to make sure you get them spayed and neutered right away unless you are planning on breeding them. I use to have all female dogs and when I introduced them, it would take awhile for them to warm up to the new female dog. However, when I got a male, they hit off immediately and get along great and are close buddies. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Is Topher neutered? If he is not, you need to consider doing so before bringing a female into your home. He's a bit big for breeding anyway IMO, and it will make marking a nonexistant problem! I agree, a male and female get along famously. But I have two females now, and they are good buddies too. I don't think sex is a factor so much as pup personality! Congrats in advance on expanding your fur family! :p |
i have a boy and girl and they love each other |
I have a male and a female and love it. They get along great. I also love having one of each to dress up. |

one of each We have a male (14mo) and then brought home a female (8mo) there was no introductory period. They took to each other like they were litter mates. He helped housebrake her and they have a great time together and will even eat out of the same bowl (if allowed) but we try to keep them seperate as she needs a little weight and he doesn't. |
I have 3 girls and they all got along from day 1. I have 5 (soon to be 6) doggy beds and they all sleep in the same one together. I think it matters on the dog not the sex. JMO |
We have 2 adorable, loveable girls, actually biological sisters that are 2 yrs apart and they always got along with no problems. They loved each other from the first introduction and even after these past 6 yrs since that baby sister arrived. I think the older one took to her like her baby in a lot of ways. Good luck in your decision ! :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
All along I've been thinking that I might have to get another little guy, which would be perfectly lovely, but the thought of being able to have a boy and a girl is so exciting! I didn't think one of each sex would work out, but it's comforting to hear of so many positive experiences! |
I dont have any expert advice, but it seems like Trooper would adjust better when he is young!!! It seems like he wouldnt get as jealous, but I dont really know because I only have one. |
We got one boy and one girl, they have there days when they play and when they fight, but they love each other..... i would get a male and female, if it were up to me i would get another one :D |
I have a male and a female, and they do wonderfully together. I would recommend you get a female, after you get Topher fixed. :) |
I agree that it depends on the personality of the individual dogs. When we brought Baxter home, Snickers was almost a year old and Baxter was 12 weeks. There was a very short adjustment period (maybe a day or two), then they became best buddies. I've never had a female yorkie, but my males play very rough. Don't know if a female would be too delicate for male 'play'. Good Luck! :) |
