I'm Sooo Angry Please help me. For those of you that are able to walk your dogs without a leash or get your dog to come to you when they are not on the leash. HOW DID YOU TRAIN YOUR DOG TO DO THIS???? Coco will come when called when we are in the house or if we are anywhere indoors. However, if she is outside she NEVER comes when called and just runs around and around and when I go close to her she takes off running. Here is my story. I never walk her without a leash but yesterday the cable guy was intalling cable and when he went out to his truck coco slipped out the door behind him TWICE! The first time I went out had to chase her for awhile finally caught her. yelled at her and spanked her butt once because she wouldn't come to me when called. So after she saw how angry I was I figured she wouldn't do it again. BUT she did....The second time I went out and called her and she ran into the neighbors back yard. I went into that neighbors yard kept calling and calling and she wouldn't come. Everytime I took a step towards her she ran into the next yard. She was runnin under their fences which meant I had to CLIMB over the neighbors fences and go into peoples backyards all the while calling her like an idiot because she is not listening to me. She runs out in the street then runs back in another backyard. FINALLY 5 houses down, I was able to get her to come close enough to me where I could grab her and I was SOOOOOO Friggin mad at her. I grabbed her by he scruff of her neck and yelled at her and when we got back to the house she was locked up for a few hours because I couldn't even stand to look at her after that. I haven't climbed a fence since I was about 10 years old and it was POURING down rain yesterday. So I'm muddy and she was too from running in puddles. I'm just SOO angry with her.  She has done this before and I have no idea why she does this only when we are outside. It's SOO frustrating |
I think you should practice the "come" command in the house with her every day. When she comes, give her a tasty treat and praise her lavishly. Make her coming to you a positive experience for her. In her doggy mind, why should she come to you when she knows she is going to get punished, spanked or crated up? Not to say you shouldn't be upset with her, I would be too, but this is a very dangerous behavior on her part and she could get lost, hurt or killed if she keeps running away from you. Also, the more you chase her, the more she runs because it is a favorite game with them. Next time, try getting her to chase you so you can grab her and get her safely home. |

and I did try to get her to chase me. I ended up looking like a running fool when she just looked at me and standing in the rain waiting for her to come to me was just so frustrating. |
Do you off lead with her at all in safe places? I started off leading with my wee girl, and gave her frequent food rewards to stay close and come to me. I vary where i put the lead on,so she doesn't try avoidance tactics. one technique when you are beginning is to use a long line to give them the feeling of freedom and use the same come techniques. i reckon she was scared to come back to you the second time,as you were so angry and had punished her.Always praise her for coming to you .Never use her name as a reprimand. If you are going to do something she won't like-bath, or whatever, don't call her-go get her. Then she will be happy to come when you call.Hope this helps. |

So I got down on my knees (lol) with a cherrio in my hand so she could see it and I tried to play with her by telling her come get the cheerio. She was very hesitant but she finally (so very slowly) came close enough I could grab her. So now she will be on a leash all the time if she is outside. I am always scared she might run the other way. Altho we live out a lil ways I am still scared she might run where I cant see her and get lost and she would NOT know her way back, even if it was just behind us to our neighbors. So they can put a lot of fear into you. Another thing I worry about is hawks, as we do have some from time to time here. I have to quit letting her know when I'm upset with her as I think they do get scared of you if you let them know your angry. but she use to always come to me when I called her. Guess shes learning too much . |
I trained my pom by first teaching her the stay command in the back yard. After she mastered that I worked on her staying and then moving a little ways a way and calling her to come. I did this for 1/2 hour several days in a row and reinforced every spring when we would be outside. Maya can be outside with me with no leash and will always stay on our property. She comes when called. Now Cali forget it, I tried working with her but outside she is so distracted. I need to spend more time working on her. |
Wolftrap --- We had several threads on this very issue - the general consensus always is that most of us can't get out little dogs to come to us when we call them....(when they are outside). My little guy - has only been loose a few times in the "very large area" behind my house. He has come to me several times - but this has been when he wanted to. Otherwise, he just goes merrily on his way. I am resigned to letting my pup loose... 1) Only on rare occasions when a lot of us are outside... 2) When he is in a fenced yard, or 3) When he is on a leash. I swear, and I've mentioned this before. You never have to teach most big dogs to come to you. They just do.... But these little dogs -- they are a challenge! Carol Jean |
Sandraj said just what I was going to say! We trained our other dog using the long lead and it worked great with her. I worked with her for a week or so with the long line, using the stay and come commands (and lots of treats) and it worked wonders. I'm just now beginning to work with Topher. Try doing perhaps a couple of 10 or 15 minute sessions a day....don't make it too long. It will work if you keep consistent and use lots of praise when they do the right thing. It might take a while for her to catch on, but don't give up!!! You'll find that when you least expect it, the lightbulb WILL go on over her head! These pups are smart little cookies. Oh, and speaking of cookies, lol...one way for sure I can get Topher to come to me is to say the word 'cookie'. That guy will wake from a sound sleep if he hears that word whispered in another room...lol...and he comes running at break neck speed!! I find myself having to spell it out now, when using the word in conversation!! Good luck! Hope it works for you. |

i trained mine with puppy treats. everytime we went out, i would yell for them to come and when they did, they got a treat. now, they always stay around me. it was very easy to do. i still give them treats but not as much. |
