Update on Yorkie Wars - Incredible!! For all who had such helpful suggestions with our problem with Chase (8 years old, 8+ lbs) and Zoe (6 mos., 2.25 lbs) not getting along. Just wanted to let you know that this weekend, Saturday morning, I decided to try something different. To begin, I held Zoe while petting Chase. Zoe got very upset as usual, but I just kept petting Chase and telling Zoe in a calm voice to settle down, Chase is a sweetie who needs love, too. Zoe eventually tolerated this and settled down. Later I picked up Chase while holding Zoe. My husband warned me that I was going to have a dog fight on my chest, but I kept them at a little distance and just carried them around the house, talking with them about being friends (I know they could not understand me, but it was the soothing voice speaking to both of them that I was trying). Later I petted Chase again while holding Zoe, and she was calmer. Chase rolled on his back for me to scratch his tummy, and Zoe wanted down. I think she wanted to jump him while he was in this submissive position, but I firmly told her no, and she settled down in my lap with her back turned to Chase. Then when Chase stood back up and started playing with my hand, I put Zoe on the floor by Chase and they actually started playing. They seemed much nicer to each other all weekend. I still intend to find a trainer to work with, but I believe I may be onto something. By gently forcing them to spend time in close proximity while speaking calmly and petting them both seems to be accomplishing something. |
It sure sounds like you are doing everything right. They are very lucky to have such a caring mommy! |
That's great news! Keep up the great work, I think they will learn to get along even better as they get used to each other. Oh, you may be surprised at what Yorkies can understand! ;) |
I'm so glad things are looking up for you all! I'm sure a little more time and they will be best buds! |
Everytime I introduced a new pup or kitten into my house, I also gently forced them to be together (but not constantly - several sessions a day) ....and always, within a week or two they became best friends. I believe that my pets (the older ones) have always learned quickly that accepting a new pet was just the way it was going to be -- and that there was "not" going to be any fighting or aggressive behavior. It just wasn't going to be allowed! And, your doing this in a calm way, is definitely the best way to do it. Very important ----- Give most of your attention and love to your older pet for a while -- because it is the one that is most upset by the new situation. And it needs continuous assurance at this time that you still love it very much. The newer puppy hasn't created this bond with you yet and doesn't have these same feelings of jealousy and insecurity. Don't make your older dog feel that she is in trouble because of the younger little guy. Keep her from growling or being aggressive, but make sure she still knows that she is loved to death. She has to continue feeling and knowing that she is your special friend. Also, give your older dog a break - away from the younger dog occasionally - and spend special time with her. Good luck! Your dogs should become friends before long. My pets have never failed to become good friends. Carol Jean |
