At what age do they need a harness? I've read that you don't need to try to take them outside for while due to health reasons... ...when do they really get big enough to "walk", and need a harness and leash? |
I'm not expert on this at all since this is my first yorkie and the first puppy. But my vet advised not to walk him in public places until he had all of his puppy shots so we went with that. He was able to go in the backyard once he was bigger but only because we had never had a animal here before so I didn't have to worry about him getting sick from another pet. |
:wavey: It is best to start them on the harness young. Princess had her first one right after all her shots. I know it's hard not to take them to the Park, or outside for walks, but it is super important to keep them safe. :) :) :) |
You shouldn't take them out to public places till they have all their shots - but you know that. So, I started getting Rowdy and Rexy used to their harnesses at about 11 weeks (put it on them in the house) so when they had their shots at 12 weeks, then they were ready to go and used to having the harness on. A few days after the final shots I start leash training. Rexy was decidedly easier than Rowdy - becaue Rexy just follows Rowdy - kinda like Pete and RePete! :D |
It's best to get a harness right away,so our baby can get used to it.We started with a kitten harness and lead. Holly wore it to the vet and to puppy school. When she had finished her shots and was allowed outside the yard, we graduated to an extra small dog one. |
I'd get them use to a harness at a young age- its easier for when you are in situations where you need to use a harness :) |

The Harness is the safest and you have alot more control of them when you take them out! a few vets have told me that a collar chokes them and really is not safe and can contribute to a collapsed trachea! introduce them to a harness when they are out of the risk of picking up parvo or other harmful things from public places & parks etc. while they are still quite young you can start by putting a harness on them and take them for a walk around the house or your yard. :animal36 |
Mayzie hated the harness--I tried it early on her. But when I finally took her outside with it on, she was so distracted that she didn't notice it. She gets excited when she sees it now because she knows it means outside. While we are talking about harness: Can somebody explain to me how a "step in harness" goes on. I use only a harness but I hate the one I have. Do I understand correctly that a step in does NOT go around their neck? Thanks Jamie |
Yes, a step in harness is like a figure of eight that their front legs step into and it does up at the back. I ordered one from petco-only to find that their smallest one is still too big for my 3lb girl. Hopeing she will grow into it. My girl doesn't like her current harness being put on,but tolerates it as she loves walks!You can get them custom made-probably my next option. |
I just bought the cutest harnass from Tiger Mom. It is so cute and Cooper doesnt mind it at all |
