HEAT issue! PLEASE HELPPPPPP! I have a Labrador that entered her first cycle of heat, I didn't expect it to happen so soon since she is not even a year old. Morix, my yorkie was ok with that during the bleeding part of the cyle but now, he is going insane! The vet told me to separate the dogs (Labrador in the garage, and Morix inside the house), clean very well all surfaces inside the house so he cannot smell her anymore, and give Morix Benadryl every 8 hs to calm him down. But still, the big problem is that he refuses to eat, unless I force him to by sticking the food inside his mouth. I am really worried cause he was hospitalized two weeks ago for vomiting and diarrhea and I know that when he does not eat he gets sick really fast. he has been on Hills i/d prescription diet for 2 weeks, just getting ready to start the regular food. The worst part is that this could go on for at least two more weeks... ANY ADVICE ON THIS MATTER WILL BE REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATED! THANKS! |
Hmmm, not sure. As long as he knows she is there he will continue to act out. Maybe you could check on the breeder section, someone there may be able to help you out.. |
My Petey abandoned me the entire time Wosie was in heat. He didn't know I existed anymore, LOL. It drives them mad. Only way I could get him to calm down was to take him to my boyfriend's house, away from her. |
Hi Petey's mom! Thanks for replying! This is a hard situation! It's great you could take him somewhere else. Now, I separated both of them but he just sits by the door and cries! The problem, again, is that I'm afraid he is not eating enough.  Morix's mom |
another problem is if she's just in the garage he can smell her on you after you go feed her or just visit her. I would think since they can smell a female for such a distance (I was thinking it was a mile or so but that may just be hounds) that the garage isnt' far enough away. |
Petey lost about 1 lb because he didn't eat as well. Maybe you can try feeding him brown rice & boiled chicken breast rather then kibbles or mixed with his kibbles. Have you asked your vet since he was recently sick? Hope you get things all worked out. Kim |
Have you thought about having him neutered? If you were going to anyway, now might be a good time. |
If he's not eating very well I would give him Nutri-Stat or Nutri-Cal 2 X a day until this is all over. It will seem like forever! |
Thanks! Yes, it seems forever!!!! Thanks for the advice... What is Nutri Cal exactly? Thanks again... |
it comes in a tube and most dogs like the taste. it is a high calorie vitamin supplement, also comes as nutristat and nutridrops. so if he's not eating properly or is overly stressed it will keep him from having a hypoglycemic reaction. it won't help calm him down, but I think it would be beneficial to him at this time. |
