Needing help or advice please 1 Attachment(s) Hi all, Since we are all Yorkie lovers I could not think of a better place to ask this question. I am in need of some Desperate help. If there is anyone around or near Springfield Missouri or even anyone to give me some ideas it would be helpful. I am going into the hospital On May 11 for major surgery of a total knee replacement. My hospital stay will be 3-5 days and will take a couple of weeks for me to at least get started to get back on my feet. Now my problem, Skippy. I love the little rugrat to death, he is 5 months old, very hyper, up to date on all his shots and on flea and heartworm prevention. To board him for almost three weeks at $25.00 a day is a little pricey right now. There is no one here that I know or trust to take care of Skippy for me for this length of time except for the boarder I've spoken with. Since we all have the same love for our furbabies, thought maybe here I could get some reasonable answers or maybe someone here is close enough to me that knows of an alternative. hope there is another YT member close to you that can help out. i actually drive mine 4 hours to my moms (or she'll come here) if i need to go out of town. |
My vet does boarding starting at $10/night for a small dog, so you might check with your vet for a better deal. That still is kind of pricey for 3 weeks but in case you have no other options it's better than $25/night. Just a thought. |
Ohhhh...he looks so sweet!! If I lived closer to ya, I'd say "no problem!! Bring him on over..." So sorry I'm not close enough to help! I'm so sorry to hear about your surgery. My thoughts and prayers are with you for a safe surgery and a speedy recovery!! |
I helped someone find a foster home in Denver for her little girl while she had to leave the country for 3 months. She is paying her something like $4.50 a day and any possible vet bills. You might want to call your vet and see if a vet tech can foster your kid while your recooping. Hope this helps |
Do you know someone who has a responsible child or grandchild (old enough to stay alone) who might be able to come stay at your house. We have friends who have dogs and they have someone who comes to stay at their house while they are gone - it's good cause it is housesitting too - so the house is not empty. |

Sorry to hear you are having to surgery.. Wondering if maybe there is a college in your area??? Sometime students are looking for some extra cash and or maybe a 4-H group that might help you out?? Keep Skippy at the boarders while you are at the hospital then see if you can hire someone like I mentioned above to help you at home... Because your Skippy will probably be your best medicine once you get back to your home... Good Luck and Keep us posted. |
I know exactly where you're at. You're having a total knee replacement and have a little rugrat (Yorkie) that needs 24/7 attention and care. You really didn't give us a lot of information. Are you single - live alone - how old is your Yorkie???? Who is the border you mentioned???? Anyway - be it good or bad - there are dozens of people around who would be more than happy to care for your little dog for a while....but who are they and where are they??? You might check with your vet's office. They may know several people you might call. Have you ask all your friends and relatives - can they help? Do they know anyone else who can help? Let them ask around also. You really don't have a lot of time before your surgery. I think you need to start networking fast!! And, I would be surprised if you can't find someone who would be happy to care for your little dog for a week or two. For sure - if any of us lived close to you - we'd take care of your little dog in a jack-minute....... no problem! Good luck! Carol Jean |
Thank you for all of your quick responses. I have been trying and talking with couple people to see what I can do for Skip. I am single and I also live in a second floor apartment...lol...another challenge with this surgery....lol. The boarder I have been talking with is also Skippy's groomer. She has been voted the best here in Springfield...her business is called pampered paws. Thought I had someone to take care of Skippy last night but they got an invite to go camping so that knocks her out. Hate to impose upon people, but considering I will not be able to do for myself much after the surgery got to try some more options. Will keep you all posted. Dee |

Gosh that seems expensive, huh? Wish i lived closer!!!! Yes, college folks should be coming home around that time - we are hiring one to keep Hope while we are out of town for a few days (can't take her with us). The housesitter idea seems good - i work with graduate students, and sometimes they are happy to house and dog sit for a reasonable price. Good luck!!!! |
Hi there! I'm a nurse and also my mom had knee replacement surgery a few years ago. I just want to say, I'm not sure you will be able to climb the stairs in 3 weeks. Have you talked to your doc, or more importantly, you need to talk to the rehabilitation folks where you will be going after surgery. I assume that you will be going to a rehab facility after the hospital stay - which is only usually 3-4 days. I would get in touch with the rehab folks where you will be going - call them now and ask if you can expect to be able to climb stairs 3 weeks post op. I know that my mom couldn't have - she had trouble with the one step up into her home. Good luck with everything - oh and the college strategy is a good one. Maybe there is a nursing school or physical therapy school at the college and one of those students could stay with your baby while you are gone and then stay with you once you get home. I know it will be costly - but I'm not sure you will be able to climb the stairs and stay alone after 3 weeks - hopefully yes, but a contingency plan in place NOW, could be a lifesaver! |
