My Yorkie won't eat My baby who is 4 months old and 2 lbs., Bella Noelle, is a very fussy eater. I have gotten samples of all of the best dry puppy foods and have mixed them with everything from baby food chicken, beef, and veal. She eats almost all the meat and leaves the dry food. She absolutely loves my cats food (dry or wet). This morning I gave her a scrambled egg and she inhaled it. However, I know she needs proper nutrition. I hate to have to cook for her (as I don't even cook for my husband since he cooks about 6 times a day for himself and the clean-up is enough!), I also tried mixing her dry food with Cesar and Wellness Puppy Food, but she doesn't eat much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone used a "raw diet" for a "tea cup"? Should I try mixing her food with ground beef (raw or cooked)? Thanx for any advice you can give. Bella Noelle |
Have you tried mixing the food with cottage cheese thats what I always do when mine wont eat. |
Cat food is perfectly healthy for dogs. One of my dogs ate "Meow Mix" her entire life. She ate other things also, of course, people food - leftovers, etc. She was perfectly healthy, happy, and playful. I contacted the Purina Dog Food Company when she was a pup and their vet said "Let her eat it, but, cat food is richer and can cause a dog to become overweight..... so, as long as she's not overweight (and she never was), she can eat it." So - at least you have cat food going for you. You can continue introducing other foods mixed with the cat food, and perhaps you'll find other foods she likes. I wish you had seen "The Dog Whisperer" last night. It was about "picky eaters" who won't eat. You won't want to hear this - but he said that dogs need to earn their food - with exercise, walks, etc. He said that dogs who lay around the house a lot, don't earn their food, and have food "brought to them or put before them all the time" are "spoiled" and often become picky, disinterested eaters. It was interesting that he said that a well-balanced, well-exercised dog should look for it's food and be eager to eat almost anything. I'm sure this is true because larger dogs who are outside getting a lot of exercise all day - seem to gobble up their food (whatever it is) at meal time. I'm not criticizing you - because I have two dogs right now who are just like yours. I am going to try and exercise them more, make them hungry, and get them eager to eat more foods. I might try feeding them only a little in the morning (they usually eat this because they wake up hungry) and then not feed them again until after we take a walk, and do other things in the evening. It's worth trying. Good luck! Carol Jean |
Cali was an extremely picky eater right from the start. I ahve tried 10-12 different dog foods and she won't eat them. I started feeding her hamburger and chicken when she was sick a couple of months ago and even then I had to coax her. all of a sudden about 3 weeks ago she started eating all 3 meals and begging for her food while I was making it. I ahve started to mix it with a little dog food and she is eating that too. She is 10 months old and I thought I would never see the day where I didn't have to coax her to eat. Hopefully she wil start eating better as she matures. Cali was about the same weight and now weighs a little over 4 lbs. Good luck I know how hard it is. |
Hi Snow Wa - Thanx for the suggestion. I just gave Bella Noelle some High-Quality Kibble mixed with cottage cheese about 10 minutes ago. Even though she didn't eat all of it (especially the kibble), I think it might work. Thanks so much for your suggestion. I would really love it if she ate only dry food, but I think that's pushing it. All in all, so far she is a really great pup and I love her to death. She's 4 months old and 2 pounds. I'm looking forward to see how she turns out. So - at least you have cat food going for you. You can continue introducing other foods mixed with the cat food, and perhaps you'll find other foods she likes. |

I am glad the cottage cheese worked for you. It it good for them too. My vet is the one that told me to mix it in their food one time when Chachi had an upset stomach and would not eat. |
You could try wetting the kibble with hot water and letting it cool a bit.It brings out the smell and it worked a bit for my pup.She likes cat food too,as it has a much stronger smell than dog food. The cottage cheese is a good idea. If she is only eating a little, make sure her kibble is really good stuff,so she gets the nutrients she needs.Good luck! Nutrical also helped pick up my puppy's apetite. She is 3lbs now at nearly six months. |
