Dixie came home today... 3 Attachment(s) And she is just precious. I have a question though. She sat with us all evening, in our laps, playing some, drinking, peeing, pooping and even a little eating. When it came time for bed, we put her in her crate and covered it up with a light blanket. (this is what our breeder advised us to do) (she is down in the kitchen) She is crying! I feel awful! But I do want to do the right thing for her and if leaving her for a while is what she needs, that is what I want to do. Am I doing the right thing??? Here are some pics of her today. She is a sweetheart! |
What a sweet, pretty little girl! I know this is hard, and honestly I couldn't take it. . . My Rhaspody was already crate trained, and she was sooo easy. I just had to have her crate by my bed, and she was fine. But Tiger, my little boy, was totally different. After the 3rd night of everyone being up most of the night because he was howling and crying; we gave in and he sleeps with us every night now. Actually both Rhapsody and Tiger sleep with us now ( Rhapsody is 4 1/2 months old, and Tiger is 3 1/2 months old). Good luck; I know it's a hard to listen to the crying, and I was ready and determined to stick it out, lol, and I just didn't have the will power in the end. |
I considered that...lol... but at 8 weeks, she is still so tiny, I am afraid of her jumping off our bed. Not real keen on her peeing in bed either. lol! |
She's so adorable. Your are so lucky to begin the puppy thing. I really miss that stage. :animal36 |
Dixie is just adorable!...We started crate training Bailey the day we brought him home, we set it up right beside our bed from day one. Aside from the odd whine here and there, he settled right in there with his little blankie. We also still make sure he has a lot of play time just before potty then off to bed. I feel much better having my furbabes in crates at nite as I have heard horror stories about pets hiding if there is a fire and their owners not being able to find them to get them out. It gives me peace of mind to have them when I can get at them if i need to.....good luck with it, and looking forward to watching your Dixie grow throught lots and lots of pictures. :animal37 |
Congrats on the new baby! She is such a cutie! I have no advice on the crate training bc I dont crate mine. |
She is very sweet. Yogi did the same thing the first night we brought him home and put him in a steel or wire crate, whatever you call that darn thing. It didn't help where we put it. We were up most the night, moving that thing up and down the stairs, into different rooms, putting blankets over it, etc. No matter what we did, he cried. We finally put him downstairs in our half bath with his blankets, beds, toys, etc. I sat downstairs and listened. Silence, beautiful silence. However, we wanted to crate train him as we heard that is the fastest, easiest way and the safest place for him to be. I went out and got him a hard sided, hard plastic dog carrier. One that was for a dog twice his size. (petsmart has them on their website.) I bought a bed specifically for it, too. It covers the whole bottom of it. He went right in it and not a peep from him yet! I use that instead of our wire crate for crate training and for keeping him safe. We've tried to put him in the wire crate since and he does the same thing, cries and howls. He just doesn't like it for some reason. So we are using the hard plastic carrier instead....he loves it. |
hang in there, it's really hard, but worth it. sometimes they need to be crated, (long term vet care, groomers, if you fly with them on an airplane, possibly on vacation) you'll be glad you stuck to your guns now. And I promise, your baby will still love you! |
oops, I forgot to say, your baby is beautiful, kinda makes me want a puppy :) |
What a cutie. I had Cali in her palypen next to my bed at first then at 5 1/2 months in my bed. I prefer to have them near me. |
So sweet :D |
Rowdy was easy, right in the crate, narry a peep. Rex was easy, right in the crate, narry a peep.............for 7 days, then the howling began (he was 8 weeks old when we got him). i think he realized that mom, dad, Rowdy and the senior dog were all in the bed right beside him. I had to make a long drive the next day, so I put him in bed with me (my hubby was out of town). We have a king bed so I put him between our two pillows (I made a space about a foot and a half wide) and then put a pillow at the bottom. In essence I made a pillow enclosure with the wall at the top and pillows at the other 3 sides. I put a blanket on the bottom and slept fitfully the rest of the night, afraid he would go potty. When I first put him in bed with me, he laid across my neck - but after he went to sleep, I put him down in the pillow well and he stayed there the rest of the night. The next night we were staying with other people in a very small house and I had him with me. I brought his crate, but didn't want him to howl and wake everyone esle up. I was sleeping in a twin bed so I put him between me and the wall and slept fitfully again, afraid he would go potty - but he didn't. And that was that - no more crate! We kept Rowdy in the crate till he was 5 months old and now he will go into a bag or a carrier with no fuss and I so wanted that for Rexy too - but no such luck. Rex has not had an accident in the bed and it has now been 5 weeks. The other night at 5:00am I awoke to a wet nose in my mouth and it was him - so I took him out and he did a pee and poop without changing positions  so I guess he REALLY needed to go. I dont' think I'll worry anymore about him pottying in the bed. |
Bella did the same thing, cry cry cry......in the crate so I just decided that is was best for all of us to put her the bed with us and all is well. I was also afraid of squishing her ....she was only 1.9 lbs when i got her at 16 weeks. she is now 10 months and only 3 lbs, and somehow she does just great with myself, Louie, her and my daughter , and sometimes my neice in the bed lol.....one big happy family. Good luck, and my suggestion would be to just put her in the bed with you if you can. |
Awwww...what a cutie! Congrats on getting her! :love-hug1 |
I've never been good at crate training either. I just couldn't let my pups cry at night. After all, it is the first time they are away from their mother and litter mates and are alone. I'm sure they don't understand what this is all about. I think they are afraid and lonesome..... :animal36 So my dogs start sleeping with me from the first night on - and there is never a squeak..... and they also have generally slept for 5 or 6 hours and (lo and behold), they haven't been bed wetters either. I get them up and out of the bed as soon as they wake up in the morning. Good luck! Carol Jean |
