Help! Puking Yorkie! Dear friends, Well, it started with a loose stool last night--but I didn't really think too much of it. Then, this afternoon, my Theo threw-up in the car (which I figured was simply due to Vermont's twisty mountain roads). Later this evening, though, I could hear noises coming from his stomach and when I took him outside he threw-up THREE times--poor sweet Theo had been holding it in. Anyway, I'm worried. He seems rather uncomfortable, fidgety, and I'm not sure what to do. I had switched him on to PuppyChow about two days ago, and have now switched him back (so far so good, but it's only been a few hours). He continues to eat, if I present it to him in my hand.. What do you guys suggest? Do you think it's his food? Could he be legitimately sick? I haven't seen any "human" food/objects come out, so I think it's safe to rule those out. Do worms or parasites have this effect? (he only goes outside to do his business..) Please help! Theo's mom |
Hey, hang in there. These people are really nice and very helpful. Could be a few different things from what I've learned from yorkietalk. Sometimes taking them off their food for a short time and then giving them some plain boiled chicken and rice will help settle upset tummies. Best wishes. |
awe ... poor baby. i think switching food can upset little tummies. |
Every time I try to switch Cali to a better dog food she ould get loose stools. If theo isn't better today i would take him in to the vet. How old is he and has he been checked for worms? Let us know how little Theo is doing. |
Hi & welcome to YT. From what I've read in the past week that I've been a YT member - changing foods can make them sick and puppy chow is not one of the recommended puppy foods. If Theo continues to appear uncomfortable, I would take him in to the vet to make sure there isn't something going on within his bowels. |
so far so good Hi everyone, Since switching back to his old food, Theo's tummy seems to be better. Thanks for your suggestions! I'll look up a better puppy food to give him.. Best, Theo's mom  |
always change foods gradually by mixing a small amount of the new with the old and gradually increasing the new over a weeks time. i agree there are better foods out there than puppy chow. |

:yeahthat: When I switched Aggie's food, I had 3/4 her old food, and 1/4 new food. I pour four cups in total and mixed them in her jar. After that was done, I poured half and half. After that, it was a complete switch. It took several weeks, not a couple of days. |
good advice on the previous post, i'm sure the slower the better for their digestive systems to get use to it. |
My dogs have "stomachs of steel." But, I know for sure though that many dogs have more "sensitive stomachs." My daughter has a dog that seems to have an upset stomach often - he will get diarrhea or throw up - and they need to be careful with what they feed him or let him eat. When their dog's stomach is upset - they give him a Tums or two and swear it really helps calm his stomach down -- just like it would ours. It cuts down on the acid and makes him more comfortable - Her vet told her that an occasional Tums is perfectly okay and probably does help her dog through these days. Good luck! Carol Jean |
