Is it too early to get fixed Parker is 4 months old on the 21st. My vet said I should have him fixed any time now and suggested I bring him in on Saturday. He still squats when he pees and doesnt lift his leg? at 3 months his weight was 2.2lbs. not sure what his weight is now. Probably close to 3lbs????? (not sure) Is this too early to have this done. They want me to bring him in at 7:00 am and pick him up at 12:45????? Does this sound normal?? Please Help - Thanks- |
I would think if your Vet thinks it's OK it shoud be. Depends on if you trust your Vet. Our Vet is great, I trust him 100%. :) |
I do trust him. He also raised Yorkies so I'm sure he does know. Parker just seem to little. Maybe I'm just worrying for no reason. |
If the vet feels comfortable doing it, then I think it would be perfectly fine. The only time I would wait is if the vet says to, or the vet does not feel comfortable doing the surgery until they are older. I think the time frame 7:00 - 12:45 is fine, also. Just make sure when you get him home that he does not jump on any couches or stairs for a couple of days. We got Hobbs fixed at 5.5 months, and he never even acted like he had surgery! He wanted to jump on things and do stairs and it was hard making him be still for a few days, but you have to do it. Hobbs still squats when he pees and he is almost 7 months old now. Ask the vet if he would consider only using gas instead of an IV. With gas, they wake up right after the surgery. With an IV, they are out cold for a couple of hours. I think the safest gas for little dogs is called Isoflourine. Good luck! I am sure everything will be fine. Just do whatever the vet recommends. |
i had bunjee fixed at 4 months and he handled it perfectly using regular iv. he's a big bigger than your puppy tho. he was pushing 5 pounds at 4 months. now at 7 months, he's still squatting to pee and no marking. my only regret is that i may have to put him under again to remove his baby teeth. |
I got astro fixed at four months too. He was around 3 1/2 lbs and did great. |

I know how you feel. I have to put Hobbs down again to get baby teeth removed. However, I don't regret getting him fixed when I did. I want him to stay a squatter! |
I have heard of other people getting it done that early. My vet wouldnt do it untill 6 months |
I think that as long as you are comfortable, he will be fine!! Sailor was done at 5 months and did fine....and Magic was only 3lbs when she was done and did excellent through the whole thing!! |

Yorkies, in general, seem bad about retaining their baby teeth, especially the small ones. Maybe you should consider holding off for a little while so you can do both at the same time. I'm not sure if I'm that comfortable with your vet's confidence. I think a good vet would tell you that there is always a risk with anesthesia. |
i waited a while, i got Harley fixed at 8 months old |
I didnt feel comfortable until Brody was closer tot he 3lbs mark. So we just had it done this week and he did great! He is back to his ole fun self after one day. The vet had asked to for me to weight until he was at least 6 month due to his weight. |
Huh... My vet told me to wait until Maddie was 6-7 months old. She's 3.8 pounds. Interesting. |
