Hi...check out this site. http://www.yorkies4me.com/topknots.htm I skip the double band stuff - and only use one. It's way easier to get in and take out. when you get good - then try the more complicated stuff. and also - just start small....try it a little every day - if he hates it take it out. Then try again the next day.....Try not to make it too tight - OR too loose Little scrunchies are easy to work with also - but don't let him remove it because they tend to eat them and you don't want that. Also - Try to make it fun for him....the more praise he gets the better he'll look forward to it. When I was getting bows on my girls the first times...I would always clap and tell them how cute they looked and they LOVED it....now they enjoy getting their hair done and sit like perfect angels. |
I use those tiny little scrunchies from walmart that are for babies. you can get lots of them very cheap. they don't hurt the hair and I think they must feel lighter on the head. they come in all different colors. I use the bands if i am going to put a bow in the hair. |
just keep trying! With mine, they just had to get use to it. The first several times I would just gather some hair in a little bunch and use a tiny band to hold it. Immediately they would shake, rub, drag their heads on the floor until it came out. But I just kept doing it. Everyday, sometimes several times a day. Eventually it would stay in a little longer- a whole minute, then maybe 5 minutes, 20 minutes... a little bit of a distraction is also helpful when you first put it in to take their mind off of it. After it started staying in a little while, then I would spice it up a little. Add a bow or a pretty clip. (they will still eat these when they fall out if given the chance... ) Make sure it's not too tight, but if it is too loose they will flip it out in no time. Just keep doing it over and over. The idea at first is to just get them use to it, and don't expect it to look "professional"- that will come in time. Good luck! |
I forgot to add that I keep these guys hair on top too short for the pretty top knot that requires the folded effect. maybe later.. :xfingers: |
Parker will be 4month old tomorrow. I use a rubber type band in his hair. Well its not rubber but its slick. I use them in my 20month old daughters hair too. They wont break the hair. He too doesnt really sit very still. I put him on top of my washer and give him a few cherrios to keep him busy. I just put the band in first. I dont sit him right down on the floor afterwards. I hold him and give him a few more cherrios then I get a toy and as soon as I put him down, I make a big deal and throw the toy, he runs brings it back to me and by then for some reason, he has forgot all about me doing the pony. after about 20 minutes, I can put a bow in it and he doesnt really seem to mind. I usually take him outside after I do it and we play. Try keeping him busy afterwards and I think it helps. At least it does for Parker. Who also hates to be brushed. (getting a little better) Good Luck, these little guys have a mind of their own. |
Sissy is 8 months old and I am just now having some success in getting her hair into a band. I just bought the Goody brand "ouchless" bands that look like plastic. Once I get it in, she has been leaving it alone. If I put a bow on top of it, the added weight (even if the bow is small) makes her aware of it and she'll shake her head till the whole thing comes out. I'm think I'm going to stick with the bands alone for several days (they come in lots of pastel, clear and bright colors) then begin adding the bows. |
You could try wrapping him up in a towel as you are putting the topknot in. |
I started out by playing with the hair on Ollie's head while she was relaxing in my lap. She is very patient with me, and it takes me a long time to get one in because of a nerve disorder that affects my coordination and sensation. |
When I first started putting Sweetie's hair up I used small hair clips, the kind that are open and you punch the back into the front - they kept her hair up longer & stayed in pretty good, too. When she got older and her hair got thicker I started using these tiny covered rubber bands - I think Scrunci makes them. Good luck - now all I have to say is "Come let me fix your hair" and Sweetie is right there- Cyndi |
i'm a quitter. i cut it off. too much trouble. i think he looks cute with short hair. |
Me too Romeo's Mom...Yogi had the prettiest, thickest hair on top of his head, I would put it up and wit distractions contantly ;) (at least I thought I was distracting) he would start the Yorkie headstands and out it would be and there would be Yogi with a long messed up bunch of hair hanging in his eyes and he'd look at me like uh oh, and run, it makes me laugh now just remembering, so I now cut him in a puppy cut around his face and he wears a long coat everywhere else. Dori has very little hair on top now due to her and Yogi's conspiracy to pull hers out hair and all. Hers goes up, she waits for me to leave the roon, she walks over to Yogi, puts her head in his face, he looks, grabs it with his teeth and out it comes! She goes and hides for about 10 minutes and walks to me with her head down LOL No topknots at this house. :p :p |
