I have a Yorkie Service Dog I have anosmia after several sinus surgeries left me with no sense of smell. Fortunately, I was able to obtain training (it takes lots of time and patience!) and was able to join the AADP with my Casey as a card carrying, jacket wearing service dog. He alerts me to smoke and/or hot things. I've lost several pans, but so far no kitchens. I am very thankful that he is here. Service dogs, however, are real workers and there are quite a few hoops to jump through. It is not to be done for having the convenience of keeping your dog with you all the time. It requires a temperment that can ignore the world, sit quietly in a lecture or dinner setting for a couple of hours. It is hard work to ask of a dog, so be very serious. A Yorkshire was recommended for me as they were bred for their good sense of smell and hearing, strong bond with caretaker, and intelligence. They are also stubborn, so take quite a bit of consistency and maintenance training. |
Interesting topic. I believe yorkies are amazing and can be trained to do about anything! BTW There are sure a lot of NEWBIES that have opinions on this subject! |

Kaos is a trained service dog for post traumatic stress disorder. He can bring medication, react to anxiety attacks and such. And he's certified with new york city.:) |
Phoebe is a service dog. She assistst me with my mental and phsyical disabilities |
The answer is yes. Lewi is my service dog. I suffer from PTSD and Itake him everywhere. People look at me strange at first when they see this 2 1/2lb. dog that I'm carrying. But he's a great comfort to me when I'm out in a crowd... |
I wanted to train one of my Yorkies to be a service dog and checked into it. I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and Asthma and sometimes can't bend over to pick up my inhaler if I drop it. I also have PTSD from a gang rape in high school. I read on one of the sites that they are doing away with the emotional certification sometime this year. If that's true it's a real shame but they said people were abusing it to get to fly free with their dogs and cats. |
Thats a shame I haven't heard that. I will definitelycheck into this. I guess someone somewhere always finds ways to abuse the system. |
