Puppy Mills? How can I be sure that my puppy is not from a puppy mill? The two places I am considering purchasing my puppy from are puppy nurseries and SEEM to take good care of the dogs. ie the dogs are kept in cribs and playpens vs cages, vetcare, caring workers. ALL pet stores, breeders, pet nurseries say their dogs have papers and of the highest quality. How can I be sure? Please help. |
I'd stay away from the pet shops...period. As far as breeders, if they are close by, check out their facilities. Lots can be said over the internet and phone but if you check it out with your own eyes, then you'll know for sure. Also, I know in the past, breeders were discussed here when people asked if anyone had heard of so-and-so. Sometimes, others can see and pick up on things that we can't. Also, provide websites if you have them. |

The first thing that caught my eye with vanitypups is that they breed and cross breed dogs...hybrids they call them. This is not a good sign. Same with the other one. They are mixing these breeds. But, the decision is yours. Some may see good things that I'm simply not seeing. I would stick to someone that specializes in Yorkies and may raise one other breed. When I see multiple breeds, I have to wonder...are all of them raised in a family envorinment? Or, are they outside in a kennel. You really don't know unless you go there and see for yourself. |
Try to avoid breeders with more than one or two breeds of dogs. People who keep their dogs in buildings outside of their homes are usually considered to be puppy mills. That is not to say these are all disreputable breeders but it is an indication that you might want to check closer. Then the people selling the dogs are not the breeder then they are a broker or a pet shop. Most good breeders will not sell to them because they want to know where heir puppies are going. And like txshopper73 said, Ask around. |
Both "nurseries" get their dogs from breeders. They do not breed themselves. They really do take super good care of the dogs though, at least while I was there. Some other pet stores I visited kept their dogs in cages and the dogs were shivering with fear. I am sure their dogs are from puppy mills. |

The question you don't know is, where are they getting these puppies from. Sure they can tell you a good story and they can make the place look nice but you need find out where these puppies are coming from. Can they provide you a name or names of the breeders? They are just the middleman for these little ones. There are many YT members who bought a dog and then started researching where their dogs came from and guess what..puppy mills. In some circles they are called breeders. Both of these places might be okay but if they are reputable they will let you see the paperwork and would want you to research these little ones. You could have a lot more heartache down the road if you don't do your homework now. Good luck on your search. |
The Yorkshire Terrier Club of New York has a breeder referral service. You should call them and they will give you names of breeders in your area that you can trust. In my opinion, this is the safest way to find a puppy. You can visit the breeders' homes, see how the pups are raised and see the parents. The Club has a website where they list phone numbers, etc. Good Luck and have fun! :) |

They are both brokers..... They might take good care of their babies but where did they get them from. Any responsible breeder will not sell to a store or boutique...... they would look for forever families to place their babies. That's what I do. I see you are in NYC.... I do not have pups now and not going to till the end of the year or even next year. But good Luck! Make sure you go into a breeder's home and see her dogs..... don't be afraid to ask questions. :) |
A responsible caring breeder would never sell through a third party such as a pet store or a broker. I place any of my dogs and puppies myself after extensive interviews etc and I provide all the info a new owner may need now or in the future for the care of their dog. I also require the dog be returned to me if it doesn't work out or if anytime in the future they cannot keep it -- and that is for the dogs' entire lifetime. You won't get that from a pet store or broker and the breeder that sells their puppies this way cannot possible care about where their puppies are going. |
