Cutting Hair - do you do it yourself? Hi everyone! I'm wondering how many yorkie owners cut/trim their baby's hair themselves?? I've been thinking about taking Frodo to a groomer, but he recently hurt his leg and I don't want to trust him to a groomer until he's better (6-8 weeks). I want to trim his hair myself because he really needs a cut (hasn't had one in about 3 months!) but I'm nervous in case I mess him up! Any suggestions before I attempt this endeavor?? :animal36 |
i've only trimmed mine. but i know there are quite a few here who groom, so good luck and you'll have to show us pictures of how it goes! |

i have only trimmed around the eyes which was a big mistake. now his hair is growing up into his eyes. i should have left it alone and it would have grown around then down. i will leave it to the groomers |
I cut Willy's hair, I keep him in a puppy cut. :) Desiree |
I'd be too scared, Princess goes to the groomers :) |
I trim myself. I do not use a clippers, too scared. I use a scissors, get the hair between my fingers nd cut it finger deep all over. It takes about an hour, I usually do it outside on the picnic table. Afterwards if you see you missed some, just snip snip. I prefer that look to the way the groomers do it cause they get them too short for my liking. |
I went and bought a grooming kit when I got Coco, complete with DVD and a HOW TO...manual. The DVD was a crash course on grooming and I have groomed my baby myself since day 1 thanks to that kit. A couple of bald spots here and there and I eventually got it down. I save money plus it doesn't stress her or me out because I don't have to leave her with someone else. |
1 Attachment(s) I groom myself, too. I also use scissors, holding the hair between my fingers to measure. It pretty much works all ovre her, though I cut shorter around her hind end. I've done this twice now (she's 8 months old). It is still trying to get her to sit still, but I found if I wear her out with a long walk first, then give her something to gnaw on, I can pretty much do what I need. I continue snipping over the next few days for the errant longer hair. I've been happy with her "puppy cut" and I control how long it is. Plus, I am paranoid about leaving her with a groomer, having her fall of the table, or her trachea getting crushed with her head in a noose. Though she is very lovable toward other people, she gets hyper and very squirmy. Good luck to you. This is Sissy a few weeks ago. I just trimmed her again yesterday. |
Thanks all for your suggestions! I really appreciate it :D |
