Sticky Tree Seeds awful ordeal to Annie & Susie and Me too! Greetings, In Minnesota here, buds have opened on the trees and there's a particular tree (I don't know if its the Elm, Birch, or Elder) that has shed some stick oval seeds (attached to furry-cotton like blossoms). The girls, when going outside love to run out there and when they come in I have to brush them and try to get all the seeds off of them. It's awful. The worst areas are the paws as the seeds stick within the paw pads and it is not a pleasant experience for them (it hurts) to have us pull or manipulate the seeds out of their paws. I have tried water on the paws which seems to help a little more than taken them off direct (it pulls the hair on the poor girls). I raked the whole back yard yesterday to get a majority of seeds, well of course more fell today and it just is a horrible experience for them. They get scared just when we come near their paws. :eek: I feel so bad for them but wouldn't be worse if we left the sticky seeds on their paws? Does anyone have a solution as to the easiest way to get these off their paws without it being so difficult and tramatic? Thank you. :eyetearss |
Eeks, poor Annie & Susie! We've always just used soap and water when Yoda gets tree sap on him, not sure if there is any other stuff you can use. Once we had to cut a few hairs cuz he got some gunk in there real good too... I hope you find a solution soon! |
Boots like Eddie and Jack wear??? I don't know - we have the same issue with the blue spruce in Colorado when we go up in late May, early June. Last year (first year for Rowdy), we had to go to walmart and get clippers and take the hair off his legs to be able to deal with the sticky things. We keep him in a puppy cut year round, so this year we will get him cut extra short to minimize the trauma of the sticky things - but I know that we will be pulling some of them out. I know that soap and water helped but did not completely get them out without pulling. It's awful! If anyone has any suggestions, I love to hear them. |
We have something similar here in Alberta except they aren't seeds. I think they're actually the sticky casings off the new leaves. Anyway the only thing I found that helped was to keep the hair between their pads shaved really short. I always had it done first thing in the spring so there wasn't much for the stickies to stick too. One other thing that might work (I've used it for chewing gum) is peanut butter. Just rub it in real good and it should help get the sap out. Of course then you have to wash out the peanut butter, hehe. Hope something helps. :) |
I wonder if baby oil or lotion might help to loosen them. We don't have the tree stickies, but we have SAND BURRS. OUCH. Ollie came in the other day with about 10 of them stuck to her. Those things are just plain mean. |
If it's the seeds sticking in the paw fur that is the major problem, you could take him to a groomer and have them just shave his feet like they do poodles. |
