Do invisible fences work? We're going to be moving and are considering a large home in the country on 1.5 acres of land, which will be quite a change from our tiny condo. We would love for Lucky to be able to run free on all of that land, but she rarely comes when called when she is outside. If she hears or smells something, she seems oblivious to our calls. Therefore, we are considering an invisible fence. How do they work? Do they work? Lucky is an extremely courageous, smart, determined dog. |
I know people who have them and yes they do work, but I don't believe they reccommend them for small dogs under 8 pounds. |
I know someone who has one and it works for their dog That said, however, if your dog is as you described, it may not stop her. The shock is not continous....once past the line...they're home free so to speak. My brother's dog yelps once and is outta there. Seems once the dog realizes that, then you have a problem. I don't know if I'd let a yorkie have free roam on that large an area, I imagine there will be predators on the property to worry about too. |
I am getting one of these at my next house. They do work. The dogs wear a special collar and it shocks them slightly when they go past their boundaries. My Husband said hes read you dont even need to put the collars on them once they get used to it. They will justnot go past the boundaries. |
I appreciate your responses. Just for clarification, Lucky is actually a "teapot" (ha ha) yorkie, weighing in at around 11 lbs, so she is a bit quicker, stronger, and heavier than a little one. The land is pretty much flat and the woods and fields are a fair distance away, so she would not be really in too much danger in the yard itself. My main fear is that the fence wouldn't work and she would run onto the county highway which is about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away. We would never leave her outside unsupervised for very long, even with a fence, but she can cover a lot of ground in a few minutes. I now question if the fence would work for Lucky due to her incredible determination. I just wish there would be some way to let her run around a bit. She would love it! I'm not sure we can afford a real fence to surround the entire lot and it might look somwhat ridiculous. |
