dog testing

 iams and hills science diet  they do dog testing and treat them badly.look on website UNCAGED. :thumbdown

sashajade 04-17-2006 07:47 AM

i thought when a company trys a dog food out that they would just give it to the dog and if it likes it its good and goes on sale or if it dont like it it dont go on sale ,i never knew dogs die from how they treat them!

sashajade 04-17-2006 03:41 PM

do any of you feed your dogs these?

Annie&Badger 04-17-2006 03:59 PM

I feed mine Royal Canin because the breeder said to. What are you feeding yours? I also can't find that site. Can you copy and paste in the URL? (the big in your explorer bar at the top that begins with "http://....)

Lacy's Mom 04-17-2006 04:28 PM

i feed mine eukanuba which is an iams product from proctor and gamble, but i am sure i have many items that are made by proctor and gamble. i don't think they necessarily test for dog food, but for other products they make. i am against animal testing, of course, but i am not a vegan nor are my dogs so 'uncaged' would also find my household to be bad and uncaring towards animals.

sashajade 04-17-2006 04:29 PM

sorry i cant do links. i just typed in uncaged in to google and it came up with the site. i feed mine the shops own brand they seem to like it more than the pricey ones lol.

they do test for dog food its on the site and it shows some very upsetting video clips. im not a vegan either or a veggy. i think they were stopped from testing other products on animals.

Annie&Badger 04-17-2006 04:41 PM

Oh wow. That's terrible. I didn't realise they did that either :( . Thanks for the links (I'll just pop the link in for anyone else that wants it if that's okay http://www.uncaged.co.uk/petfood.htm)

I was going to move to Iams but I won't bother now

Does anyone know any of these makes? Any they can recommend? I wish we had the variety of super premium foods they have available in the States...

yes, i found the information about inducing kidney, liver failure, etc. it does sound pretty bad. i am unsure whether this is still happening because everything seems to be talking about the year 2000.

thanks for the information, i will continue to research this matter and consider changing our dog food.

I just don't believe everything I see on the internet. It is so easy for anyone with a grudge to put on false information. Do you believe that the animal rights activists would not have done something about this?

I'm not blasting anyone, I'm just saying that the internet is not a reliable source of information.

sashajade 04-17-2006 04:47 PM

i didnt know either that they did that  .

sashajade 04-17-2006 04:49 PM

maybe look on the site and see which ones dont test and then pick your dog food or ask your vet.

the company is well known in the uk for animal testing and has been doing it for years and people have been trying to stop it,which i think was stopped some time ago but the dog food testing still goes on.

I agree with you definitely that you have to keep an open mind but that is an animal rights site and given that IAMS is owned by Procter & Gamble (which I didn't know!) that makes it somewhat believable to me. They're one of the world's biggest consumer group products company so they've kind of got the money and shove to get away with animal experimentation. The site very specifically names them and they wouldn't chance it if they thought they could get sued. It looks very professionally set up with all sorts of contact details and campaigns etc. so I do believe them. I'll definitely not be using IAMS or any of those other products now

Lacy's Mom 04-17-2006 05:01 PM

Here's a link that has the video clip. it is done undercover so there is no commentary. the majority of it really doesn't look much different than the pound, but, at least, shelter dogs don't have to spend their entire lives like that.

this is also why i don't mind buying my dogs from hobby breeders (people who breed their pets), rather than actual breeders who have to cage the animals or have limited time to spend with them. no dog should be kept confined in a cage no matter what the reason.

These are the companies that PETA lists as doing animal testing. So to be fair, i guess we should boycott all these companies??? it's a shame that with all our technological advances we are still doing this to poor defenseless animals.

In this case Peta has been very active in trying to educate the public on what has been going on in Iams. They finally were able to document with undercover people and help with inside employees on what is happening. Unfortunately our laws allow animal testing and some of them are just plain stupid things like hair spray, perfume and cosmetics. I have know about this for at least 4 years and I do boycott Proctor & Gamble products. I also try to always buy products that say "no animal testing was done with this product".

http://www.iamscruelty.com/introduction.asp

http://www.peta.com/

While Peta has gotten a bad name with normal America they are the only organization that works to try and stop animal cruelty on all levels all over the world. As painful as their website is you would be shocked at what is happening in this country along with many other countries. While growing up I loved going to the circus and rodeo's but I can no longer support the cruelty they impose on the animals. Peta's website educated me on these things and I feel we all should be aware and try to do our small part to help end the suffering.

Kim000001 04-17-2006 07:48 PM

WOW thats a lot of companies that do animal testing, it probably would have been easier to list the ones that don't!!

I too am in Canada, and my Bailey was on Iams when we brought him home, we took him to the vet for a health check a couple of days after , and she said not to feed him that, there is a lot of fat, corn and filler....she recommended either Acana (which is made here in Alberta) or Nutrience. After talking to a couple of groomers as well, we decided on the Acana because they both said it is best for a yorkie coat...they have a small dog puppy food, also a lite adult for my over weight beagle, plus we have a cat with alot of food alergies , we talked to a rep and were told this is good for her (their cat food) so she is now able to eat dry food with out vomitting all over the house. I'm not sure if you can get it there, but if you can I would give it a shot...hope that helps a bit.

i agree....anyone can place ads like this on the web. i would be cautious to believe this. iams is such a large company (proctor & gamble), i dont think they could get away with this.

PETA also has a lot to say about Iams... PETA and Iams

These are two foods that are sold by vets. Why do vets push the sales? Not because these foods are all that great but because they get a cut off of the sales!

proctor and gamble are well known for animal cruelty by the people in the uk, its been going on for years. however i didnt know they were so cruel to dogs when they test there dog foods.

very true, also people shouldnt forget vets test on animals when they are training and sadly i think a lot of vets do it just for the money or they wouldnt charge so much.

What do you think pharmaceutical companies use to test their drugs before testing them in humans?

I was going to move to Iams but I won't bother now

Does anyone know any of these makes? Any they can recommend? I wish we had the variety of super premium foods they have available in the States...

Arden Grange
Burns
Europa
Fromm Family Foods
Naturediet
Pero Foods
Top Number and Happidog
Trophy Pet Food

I feed mine Burns and it is fantastic.
My lab has more energy, doesnt smell like he used to, has virtually stopped moulting too.
If you contact them they will send you samples
A friend has a collie and it was mental, barking and jumping at everyone and she changed to Burns and she has a totally different dog

Well, if we're going to boycott, fair's fair. Check out this web site:

http://www.petakillsanimals.com

We can believe everything we see on the web, nothing we see on the web, or we can spend a lot of time checking out everything we see on the web. The first two are just plain dumb and the third is somewhat impractical.

I don't have any answers - or even any suggestions. Just thought I'd broaden the issue - it seems NOBODY's hands are clean.

Lacy's Mom 06-26-2006 05:27 PM

Very eye opening. I hope those that support PETA will have a chance to go to the site.
